The NFL Draft is only eight days away. Minnesota has SIX picks (Rounds 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 & 7). Assuming they don’t trade for wide receiver, Anquan Boldin, below is my take on what they need to do.The Vikes head into the NFL Draft with needs at offensive tackle, center, offensive guard, quarterback (although Childress doesn’t think so), cornerback and wide receiver.
If somehow the Vikes land Percy Harvin at # 22, the whole NFL Draft in 2009 is a success for Minnesota. Harvin is a STUD who can play the slot and be a return man. If Harvin is gone by # 22, The Vikes will look to help the offensive line. I think Minnesota needs to leave the first three rounds with a wide receiver, center and an offensive tackle.
I understand that Harvin failed a drug test at the Combine (marijuana), but still he is the guy the Vikes need! Yes, it is concerning one would be so dumb to be peeing dirty at the Combine where you KNOW you are going to get tested, but still I want Harvin. Randy Moss smoked a little dope in his day and he turned out alright! Granted Moss wasn’t dumb enough to smoke it before the Combine.
If the Vikes don’t land Harvin, I can live with Eben Britton, a offensive tackle in the first round. Minnesota will NOT be drafting a cornerback in Round One. These magazines and websites that think they will prove they don’t know ANYTHING about the Minnesota Vikings.
Round 1 (# 22): Percy Harvin (WR/KR) – Florida
Other possibilities: Eben Britton (OT) – Arizona, Alex Mack (C) – California
Round 2 (# 54): Eric Wood (C) – Louisville
Other possibilities: Duke Robinson (OG) – Oklahoma, Victor Harris (CB) – Virginia Tech
Round 3 (# 86): Jamon Meredith (OT) – South Carolina
Other possibilities: Mohammed Massaquoi (WR) – Georgia, Nate Davis (QB) – Ball State
Round 5 (# 158): Myron Pryor (DT) – Kentucky
Round 7 (# 221): Tony Carter (CB) – Florida State
Round 7 (# 231): Chase Daniels (QB) – Missouri

I think the Vikings will try and trade down. Picking up a later first round pick, where they can pick up Harvin or Britton. Then they will move up in the second round and fill in the other need at WR or OT, (which ever isn't picked up from round one). Then they start grabbing best player available... hopefully snagging a QB somewhere in there.
Totally, Newt! I really hope the Vikes get Harvin. I think if we can get Harvin we could be really good next year. I'll be really angry if they pick an OT.
prob from second hand smoke anyway, i say draft harvin, let him fail more drug test in the nfl and then get suspended and then eventually traded, that is what the vikes do best
Harvin would be a disaster. The guy is an off-field issue concern, and failed a drug test at the combine to boot.
Further we need to draft to win NOW. A WR takes years to develop (3 is typical)...if there are any tackles available who can contribute at RT that MUST be our pick in the first.
Nice mock.
Although I do not think that Robiske or Moore will be there for the Vikings.
Also, Caldwell may not either.
I agree with you on the CBs and I believe that the Vikings can still sign a FART (free agent right tackle) like Runyan or Tauscher along with drafting a lineman.
Here is my mock ...
#22 Peria Jerry DT (if some of the scouting reports are true they can play him at LDE too)
#54 Max Unger OC/OT (versatile and they can still sign a FART)
#89 Chip Vaughn S (we need somebody behind Tyrell & MadWill)
#158 Patrick Turner WR
#221 Ramon Foster OG/OT
#231 Josh Mauga LB
Huh huh, sign a FART.
Will you sign my fart?
It is more likely and rumored that New England wants to trade their #34 pick for a first next year.
How about this?
Trade our 2010 1st valued at approximately 775 to 600 points and some set of conditional picks in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th rounds to New England for their #34 valued at 560 points, #89 valued at 145 points, and #168 valued at 25.2 points.
That would give us the #22, #34, #54, #86, #89, #158, #168, #221, & #231 picks.
We would not have a first round pick next year but we would have 5 picks in the top 89 which should help to rebuild the offensive line and wide receiver positions.
Here are three different trade scenarios for moving up this year assuming that Stafford & Sanchez are available ...
1. At #8 with Jacksonville we trade our #22 & #54 this year and either our 2nd next year or a player
2. At #7 with Oakland (or maybe #5 Cleveland) we trade our first this year and next year
3. At #10 San Francisco we trade our #22 & #54 this year plus a third next year or a player
If we did #1 or #3 we still could trade our first next year to New England for the set of picks described above (or something close).
That may be too much dealing for the TOA to handle though.
I would do it but I do not think they are ready to give up on TJack or Sage.
I am a big Tebow fan and would love for him to play for the Vikings.
I think that with next year being a possible uncapped year and the fact that teams that make the playoffs will not be able to participate in free agency until they lose a free agent, makes the deal with New England (getting their #34 etc. for our first next year) more plausible.
