The Vikes drafted 10 players in the past three days. They looked fondly on people with the first name of Christian and with the last name Burton. Minnesota filled some holes and although Ponder may have been a reach, the Vikes needed a young quarterback. Only time will tell.

The Overhaul Begins...

So after the craziest year in Minnesota Viking and likely NFL history, the Vikes have A LOT of retooling to do. With one year left on the lease at the Metrodome, this is a HUGE off-season for many, many reasons including a possible new stadium and location for the Vikes for the 2012 season.

COACH
First thing first (well besides the minor point of where the hell they are going to play next season), the Vikings need a new Head Coach. Thank God, Zygi finally fired Brad Childress and defensive coordinator, Leslie Frazier was named Interim Head Coach. Frazier won his first game on the road with Favre against the Redskins, crushed the horrible Bills at Metrodome with Tavaris Jackson, got embarrassed by the Giants in DETROIT after the Metrodome collapsed (T-Jack at qb), was totally humiliated at TCF Field by the NFC North Champion Chicago Bears with a little Favre and a lot of Joe Webb and most recently shocked the world by beating the #3 team in the NFC, the Eagles at Philly.

Long story short, the Vikes are 3-2 under Frazier with one game (at Detroit) to go. Assuming the Vikes beat the Lions and Frazier goes 4-2, he is a TOTAL LOCK for the job. The players like him and he learned under Tony Dungy and played defensive back for da Bears even in his day. If the Vikes lose to the Lions, pending effort, you still may have to hire Frazier. Who else are you going to get? Bill Cower? Jon Gruden? John Fox? I doubt any of those guys want to come to Minnesota. Frazier is the best option the Vikes have.

On to the rest of the squad.

QUARTERBACK
It’s time to let Brett Favre sail off into the sunset. Obviously his second year with Minnesota was a COMPLETE disaster. He was awesome in 2009, but he was horrible in 2010. Let Favre retire and STAY retired. The Tarvaris Jackson experiment is over. The kid simply can NOT play in the NFL. He is one of several Free Agents that the Vikes should NOT resign. That leaves Joe Webb as the lone quarterback on the roster. Although he shows promise, he is clearly not ready to be the lead dog. I’d keep Webb as the backup and try to get Donovan McNabb to start for a year or two in Minnesota. The other alternative is using the Vikes first round pick on either: Cam Newton (Auburn), Blaine Gabbert (Mizzu), Jake Locker (Washington) or Ryan Mallett (Arkansas). I’m not sure who I’d take from that bunch.

RUNNING BACK
Obviously Adrian Peterson continues to be one of the best, if not the best back in all of football. He has seemed to cure his fumbling problem, but has some issues on 3rd & 4th and a yard. Toby Gerhart has shown flashes of having some talent and obviously should be kept on the roster to back up Purple Jesus. A late signing from the UFL, Lorenzo Booker has potential as a kick returner and as a third down back. I’d keep him around too.

WIDE RECEIVER
It is clear that Percy Harvin is a playmaking STUD. Hopefully another off-season helps the docs figure out his migraine problem. Harvin is a solid wide out best suited for the slot. That leaves the Vikes needing two other starters. Sidney Rice, who arguably helped ruin the season by delaying NEEDED hip surgery, appears to be an up and coming receiver. Although Rice is a Free Agent, I don’t expect the market to be too large for him since he only had one good season with Favre throwing to him and barely played this year. Assuming the market isn’t too high, the Vikes need to re-sign Sid the Kid. That leaves one starting spot and the guy who is NOT going to get it is Bernard Berrian. He is SO, SO BAD. He may be my least favorite Viking and he is getting paid a ton. Berrian needs to be CUT as soon as the Lions game is over. I wouldn’t even let his bum ass fly home with the team. Greg Camarillo is fine to keep around for a 4th-5th option, but the Vikes have some serious holes at wide receiver. Bye Greg Lewis, thanks for the one great catch and bye Hank Baskett, at least you have a hot wife although she is dumb as a rock.

TIGHT END
It was a down year for Visanthe Shiancoe, but he still looks like one of the better tight ends in the league. He had a SERIOUS problem with penalties, but is a great red zone threat and decent blocker. Jimmy Kleinsasser I assume is going to retire, but maybe he has one more year in him.

OFFENSIVE LINE
The national media loves hyping up the Vikes Offensive Line, but in reality they are horrible, especially without Steve Hutchinson! Hutch will back to anchor left guard, but he is the only lineman I’m really sold on. I hate Bryant McKinnie and think he is a lazy, over-priced bum. That being said, I assume the rest of the league knows that too and his trade value is minimum. Trade McKinnie FOR SURE if you can or else he plays left tackle again. In his second season, Phil Loadholt took a MAJOR step in the wrong direction. He has defensive ends blowing by him and when he doesn’t, he is holding. Phil needs to get his ass in shape and has potential to start at right tackle, but I’d be on the lookout for a tackle if I was the Vikes. Oh yeah and bye Ryan Cook. You are a total bum. Anthony Herrera tore his ACL this year, but should be back for next season. I like his fire, but I’m not sure he is the answer at right guard. Rookie Chris DeGeare has filled in nicely and should push Herrera for the starting spot come Training Camp. John Sullivan, the Vikes center had a bad, bad year also. Apparently he has no idea how to shotgun snap and it is possible the Vikes will have a new center in 2011.

DEFENSIVE LINE
The Vikes front four has long been a strong point for Minnesota and should continue to be one. Jared Allen had a down year, but really turned it on as of late, has proven that he still is an elite defensive end. Opposite him is Ray Edwards who is a Free Agent, as is backup Brian Robison. I like Edwards fire and effort and hope if the price is decent that the Vikes keep him around. Robison is a decent backup that is athletic and I wouldn’t think will command too much money to keep him around. Kevin Williams and his brother (not really) Pat Williams for years have formed the Williams Wall. I think that it is time for Fat Pat to hang ‘em up and let one of the young guys like Letroy Guion fill his spot. Kevin Williams is still elite and should be a Viking for life. Jimmy Kennedy is worth keeping around and it's likely Fred Evans will walk as he is a Free Agent.

LINEBACKER
Another priority for the Vikes HAS TO BE to re-sign outside linebacker, Chad Greenway. Greenway has had two great seasons and will command a lot of money as a Free Agent. Opposite Greenway is fellow South Dakotan Ben Leber. Leber’s days are done and I would let him for sure walk as a Free Agent. Maybe Jasper Brinkley or Heath Farwell could battle for his spot. Middle linebacker, EJ Henderson bounced back amazingly fast from his devastating broken leg last season. Although EJ struggles in coverage, he is fierce and will remain the Vikes middle ‘backer.

CORNERBACK
Minnesota has some issues here. Losing Cedric Griffin with an injury was big and hopefully he regains his 2009 form in 2011 and can start at one corner. The Vikes other starting corner is Antoine Winfield. Winfield is getting a little older (33) and although his coverage skills aren’t exactly shutdown, he is widely respected as the best tackling corner in the league. He is a playmaker too. I’d love for the Vikes to move him to safety and get an actual shut down corner via Free Agency or the NFL Draft. Rookie Chris Cook appears to be injury prone and looked pretty bad towards the end of his 2010 season after showing great promise in training camp. Asher Allen I think should be CUT per he is hopeless and Lito Sheppard will OBVIOUSLY NOT be re-signed this off-season. The Vikes needs some MAJOR secondary help. Just wait until we get to the Safety position.

SAFETY
In addition to quarterback and o-line, safety is a MAJOR WEAKNESS for the Vikes. Madieu Williams is a TOTAL BUST and has to be CUT with Berrian after the Lions game. Tyrell Johnson, who was drafted in the 2nd Round in 2008 is a never will be and should be CUT also. That leaves Jamarca Sanford and Husain Abdullah. Both Sanford and Abdullah are terrible, but you can’t cut them all can you? The Vikes need a major overhaul at safety.

The red hot Dallas Cowboys came to the Metrodome on Sunday and got ROCKED by the Minnesota Vikings 34-3. After beating Philadelphia in back to back weeks, Dallas all of a sudden was a popular pick to beat the Vikes at Metrodome and even possibly win the Super Bowl.

Many people had forgotten how good Minnesota is at home. The Vikes finished the 2009 Season 9-0 at Metrodome. I made it to six of them!

The Cowboys with Tony Romo at quarterback moved the ball early on the Vikes but they couldn’t get in the end zone. Ray Edwards forced a fumbled that Kevin Williams recovered on the Cowboys first drive and the Dallas kicker missed a 48 yarder on their second drive.

The Minnesota defense played great as the Vikes front four took it to Dallas. Edwards had three of the Vikes six sacks. Jared Allen, Chad Greenway and Jimmy Kennedy had the other ones.

Romo was 22 of 35 for 198 yards with an interception (Ben Leber). Romo also fumbled three times, losing two of them (Leber and KWill).

Offensively for the Vikes it was once again the Brett Favre show. Favre was 15 of 24 for 234 yards including FOUR touchdowns. Favre hit Sidney Rice late in the first quarter on a 47 yard perfectly placed bomb for a touchdown to give the Vikes the early 7-0 lead. Favre then hit Rice again in the second quarter on a 16 yard td pass. It was a phenomenal effort by Rice. Favre and Rice again connected in the third on a 45 yard touchdown. Then to cap it off, Favre hit Visanthe Shiancoe for an 11 yard touchdown that made several Cowboys angry. It was great.

Rice ended the day with 141 yards on six catches, half of them touchdowns.

It was another somewhat slow day for Adrian Peterson. AD had 26 carries for only 63 yards.

All in all it was a great game for the Vikes. Now the Vikings will visit the New Orleans Saints next Sunday at 5:40 pm. The winner will represent the NFC at the Super Bowl.

As a somewhat spontaneous move, I decided I am going to the game with one of my best friends. This could be a legendary weekend. Yes, New Orleans is good, but their defense is suspect and we have Brett Favre. Don’t be shocked if the Vikes are in the SUPER BOWL HOMEBOY!

Vikes to Host Cowboys

Wow, what a weekend. The Cardinals knocked off the Packers in overtime last night in a great NFL game and on Saturday, Dallas defeated Philadelphia for the second week in a row.

With the Dallas victory, it means that the Vikes will host ‘dem Cowboys at Noon this Sunday for the Vikes first playoff game. Even though the Vikes are 8-0 at Metrodome this season, many “experts” are high on the Cowboys and think that they will beat the Vikes. Minnesota is a three point favorite and if you like money, I HIGHLY recommend taking the VIKES!

With Brett Favre, the Vikes are NOT going to lose at home in the playoffs. Yes, it is scary that Demarcus Ware will be going against Bryant McKinnie and that Tony Romo utilizes a quick three step drop, which the Vikes have struggled with, but Minnesota is going to win this game.

I’m torn and want to go, but doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. The playoff beard is in prime form, albeit it does itch a fair amount. After the Vikes beat Dallas, they will either host the NFC Championship if Arizona wins or visit New Orleans for the NFC Championship. Somehow, someway I’m going to that game!

Some side notes, I haven’t wrote about include Percy Harvin being selected as the Offensive Rookie of the Year and Harvin being among NINE Vikes selected to the Pro Bowl. The other are: Brett Favre, Sidney Rice, Adrian Peterson, Steve Hutchinson, Bryant McKinnie (not sure how he made it), Jared Allen, Kevin Williams and Heath Farwell.

Thanks to a dominating performance by Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings Offense, the Vikes CRUSHED the New York Giants 44-7 at Metrodome. The game was over by halftime.

Favre threw four touchdown passes (three in the first half) and was 25 of 31 for 316 yards. Favre and the Vikes O looked like a machine. Sidney Rice had six catches for 112 yards including two touchdowns. Visanthe Shiancoe had seven receptions for 94 yards including a 10 yard touchdown on the Vikes first drive.

Adrian Peterson played a limited role and only had 54 yards on nine carries including a touchdown.

The Vikes defense played well too. Pat Williams played and Antoine Winfield played also, but in a reduced role. Jared Allen had sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery all on the same play. Chad Greenway made a spectacular interception and had four tackles.

It was an all out ass kickin’ by the Vikes. A much needed ass kickin’. Minnesota ended the year 8-0 at home. Thanks to the Cowboys beating the Eagles in Dallas later in the day, Minnesota secured the #2 seed in the NFC. Minnesota will have a bye in the First Round and will host either: Dallas, Philadelphia, Arizona or Green Bay in the Second Round.

Minnesota showed some serious offensive power and proved again that they are dominant at home. The Vikes SHOULD beat however they play in the next round and be in the NFC Championship. If somehow the Saints could lose, the NFC Championship would be played at Metrodome. Wow, how amazing would that be?

I’m not ready to anoint the Vikes as NFC Champions, but with Brett Favre leading this squad, it still may happen.

Thanks to Adrian Peterson, Ben Leber and Antoine Winfield, the Minnesota Vikings lost a thriller (in the second half) 36-30 to the Bears in Overtime in Chicago. This marks the Vikes second loss in a row. The Vikes have lost three of four, all on the road and at night, but still.

Minnesota was 10-1 a month ago and appeared a LOCK for the #2 seed. Now they likely won’t get a bye. What a disaster! If Dallas beats Philly and if Minnesota beats the Giants, then the Vikes will be the two. If Philly wins, they are the two seed.

Many Vikes fans will blame the loss last night on Adrian Peterson whose fumble in overtime setup a 39 yard touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to something named Aromashodu. It was the THIRD time in the game that Antoine Winfield was BEAT for a touchdown. Winfield has been hurt a majority of the year and was a major spark for the Vikes versus the Bengals, but in the Vikes last three losses, he has been a TOTAL disaster. I honestly think I may be a better cover corner right now then Winny. Bench Winfield for Karl Paymah? Sadly, it’s worth considering.

The Vikes were down 16-0 at half and basically didn’t show up in the first. Minnesota rallied behind Brett Favre to score 30, yes 30, second half points including a six yard touchdown from Favre to Sidney Rice with 16 seconds left in the game.

Favre ended the day 26 of 40 for 321 yards including two touchdowns and a lost fumble. Peterson rushed for 94 yards on 24 carries and had two one yard touchdowns.

The Vikes run stuffing defensive tackle, Fat Pat Williams missed the game due to an elbow injury. Not sure how serious it is.

Minnesota had an extra point BLOCKED after their first touchdown. This obviously cost them the game.

Many Minnesota Vikings were a total disaster on Monday. I honestly think that Ben Leber should be cut. He is possibly the WORST linebacker in the NFL. He can’t tackle or catch. Chad Greenway was a joke. Winfield was the worst player on the field. Bernard Berrian is horrible. Chris Kluwe has got to be the worst punter in the NFL. Jasper Brinkley should never play football ever again because he’s SO BAD. He actually is worse then Leber. How sad! Bryant McKinnie continues to be OVERRATED and a piece of shit. Anthoney Herrera is so bad he make McKinnie’s fat ass look good. The whole Vikes kickoff coverage team is an embarrassement and Head Coach, Brad Childress is the dumbest son of a bitch alive.

At 11-4, Minnesota has one game left, hosting the pathetic New York Giants. Minnesota may blow that game too. Somehow I think Minnesota beats the Giants and will win their first playoff game at home against Dallas, but they will get DRILLED at Philly in the next round.

The 2009 Minnesota Vikings WILL NOT win the Super Bowl. I honestly feel bad that Favre has to play with these jokers in purple and be coached by such a tool.

One game ball is awarded, Brett Favre. The only decent player on the Vikes.

Another SNF Disaster

Thanks to the Green Bay Packers losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Minnesota Vikings found out they had become NFC North Champions roughly an hour before kickoff. It is the Vikes first time in over 30 years to be NFC North Champions in back-to-back years.

The New Orleans Saints lost to the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday giving the Vikes a possible hope of being the #1 seed in the NFC, that was until the Vikes/Panthers game started.

It was another TOTAL DISASTER on Sunday Night. For the second time in three weeks Minnesota played horrible on Sunday Night Football on the road. Carolina beat Minnesota 26-7, dropping the Vikes to 11-3.

Let me start by saying that Bryant McKinnie is the most overrated player in football. He is the SLOWEST moving human I have even seen. He can’t pass block and Julius Peppers OWNED him last night. The only good move Brad Childress did all night was to bench McKinnie for Artis Hicks. Hicks was terrible too.

While we are on the topic of terrible, a week after Antoine Winfield dominated the Bengals game, he looked like one of the worst cornerbacks in the league. Steve Smith of the Panthers rocked his world on Sunday. Smith caught nine balls for 157 yards including a 42 yard touchdown on Toine. It did look like a bit of a push off, but Winfield was bad all night long.

Jasper Brinkley, EJ Henderson’s sub, had a bad, bad day too. Brinkley couldn’t tackle and couldn’t cover anyone. Minnesota clearly misses Henderson. Fellow linebacker, Ben Leber played poorly too. He whiffed on a fumble recovery, couldn’t tackle and couldn’t cover anyone either.

Vikes quarterback, Brett Favre and the Vikes offense STRUGGLED against the Panthers. Favre was 17 of 27 for 224 yards with an interception in the Panther’s end zone. Favre was getting hit so much by the Panthers and Peppers that Chilly tried to get him out of the game in the third quarter when the Vikes had a 7-6 lead. The two had a heated exchange and Favre stayed in the game. This has created a bunch of drama by the Minneapolis media, but I don’t totally see why. Chilly knows that without Favre, this team is done for.

The Vikes lone touchdown came on a four yard run by Adrian Peterson. AD had 35 yards on 12 carries. Again the Vikes were unable to establish their run game.

Sidney Rice had four catches for 69 yards, but he had his first career fumble. Percy Harvin was back on the field, but he had little impact. Harvin caught one ball for 10 yards.

No game balls awarded due to another piss poor performance.

This game was very scary for the Vikes. I was willing to believe the Vikes just didn’t show up for the Arizona game, but for two out of three weeks to be a disaster on the road is not good.

Minnesota is without EJ Henderson, huge loss on defense and they are struggling to stop the pass. On offense Favre is looking like again the December/January thing is getting to him and Minnesota can’t establish a run game with the best back in the league.

Last week I thought that as the #2 seed Minnesota had a hope to get to the Super Bowl, but not anymore. The Vikes will win their last two games, be the #2 seed, get a bye in the first round, beat the Eagles at Metrodome in the second round, but they will get ROCKED on the road in the NFC Championship game in New Orleans. It’s not that I think the Saints are that good, but the Vikes WILL NOT win a road game in the playoffs.

Obviously it is a very depressing day and the season is not over, but I just don’t think the Minnesota Vikings can win the Super Bowl this year. I sure hope they do and after they win their last two and beat the Eagles, I’m going to be pumped, but like always they are just going to break our hearts.

Vikes Tame Bengals

Vikes Pro Bowl cornerback, Antoine Winfield returned after missing six games to spark the Vikes to a 30-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Winfield was dominant against both the run and the pass in his return. Winny had nine tackles and forced a fumble.

The Vikes defense held Carson Palmer and the Bengals to 94 yards passing. Palmer did throw a 15 yard touchdown to Chad Ochocinco, but that was the lone bright spot for them.

Minnesota was without linebacker, EJ Henderson, safety, Tyrell Johnson and wide receiver, Percy Harvin. Jasper Brinkley filled in rather nicely for Henderson, as did Jamarca Sanford for Johnson. Both are rookies.

Adrian Peterson rushed for 97 yards on 26 carries including two touchdowns (1 & 3 yards). AD also caught three balls for 40 yards.

Brett Favre was 17 of 30 for 192 yards including an interception and a great nine yard touchdown to Sidney Rice.

A week after the WORST game by far the Vikes played all year, Minnesota dominated a pretty decent Bengals team. Cincy is tough against the run and does have Palmer and #85 on offense. The Minnesota offensive line went out and took it to the Bengals pretty good and Winfield and the Vikes defense clearly played inspired.

With the victory Minnesota secured a playoff spot and after they beat the Panthers on Sunday Night, they will have clinched the NFC North. It is looking like the Vikes will be a lock for the #2 seed in the NFC meaning they will likely play a team like the Cardinals, Eagles, Packers or Cowboys at Metrodome to go to the NFC Championship.

The Vikes need to finish strong and hopefully that Arizona game was just a bad, bad day. Minnesota is still a legit contender for the Super Bowl and with leaders like Favre, Peterson, the Williams Wall, JA and Winfield; I think they have a pretty decent shot at winning it all.

Disaster in the Desert

The Minnesota Vikings were ROCKED by the Cardinals 30-17 last night in Arizona. The worst news of all was that Vikes middle linebacker, EJ Henderson, fractured his femur during the game. His season is obviously over. Henderson’s backup is rookie, Jasper Brinkely.

Well, let’s start with the positives from the game… oh yeah, there were NONE.

The game was a TOTAL DISASTER. Benny Sapp forced a fumble on Arizona’s opening drive, this led to a Brett Favre to Visanthe Shiancoe three yard touchdown. After that everything went downhill. The Cardinals outscored Minnesota 30-3 after that until a late junk 31 yard touchdown from Favre to Percy Harvin.

No one on the team showed up. Favre was terrible, Adrian Peterson was terrible, Jared Allen and the entire Vikes defense was terrible. It just was not good.

Favre ended the day 30 of 45 for 275 with two interceptions to go along with his two touchdowns.

Peterson only rushed for 19 yards on 13 carries. That’s 1.5 yards per carry.

Minnesota couldn’t establish the run and Favre struggled to beat the Cardinals nickel/dime defenses. Brad Childress was out coached (yeah, what’s new) and the Vikes showed no emotion until after the game as many players were solemn after the crushing injury to their Defensive Captain, Henderson.

Kurt Warner, who by the way I HATE, was 22 of 32 for 285 with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Anquan Boldin caught two of them and Larry Fitzgerald caught the other.

Vikes cornerback, Anotine Winfield missed his SIXTH straight game. No clue what his deal, but Minnesota needs him back.

Now at 10-2, the Vikes need to finish strong to hold on to the #2 seed in the NFC to get a home field bye for the first round of the playoffs. Many people are VERY DOWN on the Vikes today and for good reason. The teams that even I thought looked a lock for the NFC Championship game now appears very shaky.

Even though the loss of Henderson is huge, I think Minnesota will finish the season 4-0 or 3-1. They will get a first round bye and will host a game in the next round. I still like the Vikes chances at home over anyone in the league.

The Vikes still have hope of winning the Super Bowl. Yesterday was horrible, but with a strong performance this week at Metrodome versus the Bengals, the Vikes will be back on track.
No game balls are deserved after this horrible performance.

I will be attending my SIXTH home game of the year on Sunday when the Vikes host Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco. I’m 5-0 so far and expect to be 6-0.

Favre Does it Again

Another spontaneous trip to the Vikes game, leaves me a little behind again! Thanks to Brett Favre, the Vikes DRILLED the Bears 36-10 on Sunday at Metrodome.

Minnesota held Chicago to 12 plays for 12 yards in the second half. Favre again was nearly perfect going 32 of 48 for 392 yards with 3 touchdowns. Percy Harvin, Vinsanthe Shiancoe and Chester Taylor were all on the receiving end.

Adrian Peterson scored a touchdown on a five yard run in the fourth quarter. Purple Jesus had 85 yards on 25 carries. He was ill last week and has somewhat of a nagging ankle injury. The only real downside to the whole game was Peterson’s two fumbles (one which was recovered by the Bears).

I honestly don’t understand how he fumbles so much. Especially when every announcer, etc always says he has the hardest handshake EVER. Maybe Sea Biscuit needs to be like Darnell Jefferson in “The Program” and carry a football everywhere he goes with him.

Teams continue to stack the box to stop Peterson and let Favre beat them. I wonder when this will change. Sooner or later teams are going to have to stop Favre and open things up for All Day!

The Vikes defense played great and really shut down Jay Cutler. Cutler was 18 of 23 for 147 yards including a 24 yard touchdown and two interceptions (one by Cedric Griffin in the end zone).

Antoine Winfield missed his fifth game with an injured foot. He was expected to play.

Jared Allen had two sacks and even picked off Cutler on a ball batted high in the air. It was Allen’s second career interception.

The Vikes continue to roll and now at 10-1 winning the NFC North seems like a forgone conclusion. Minnesota is trying to keep pace with the now 11-0 New Orleans Saints who I must say looked really good last night against the Patriots. Drew Brees is amazing.

Both teams have five games to go, but it appears the road to the Super Bowl for Favre and the boys will go through New Orleans.

Brett Favre threw FOUR touchdown passes as the Vikes crushed the Seahawks 35-9 at Metrodome.

The game started slowly as the first quarter was marred with penalties and a slow start for the Vikes offense. However, once the second quarter started, Favre and the Vikes O started clicking. Minnesota scored on all three drives in the second quarter.

An 84 yard drive capped by a Favre to Percy Harvin 23 yard touchdown started the scoring. On Minnesota’s next possession, Favre hooked up with Visanthe Shiancoe (now maybe the BEST tight end in the league) on an 8 yard touchdown pass to cap a 70 yard drive.

After Heath Farwell recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Favre connected with Bernard Berrian on a 3 yard touchdown. It was 21-0 Minnesota at half.

Even without Antoine Winfield for the fourth straight game, the Vikes defense played really well all game long.

Favre threw a 7 yard touchdown to Sidney Rice to make it 28-0 Minnesota in the third. Favre’s day was done after going 22 of 25 for 213 yards with FOUR touchdowns and ZERO interceptions.

Tarvaris Jackson subbed in and played the fourth quarter going 6 of 8 for 77 yards including a 34 yard to Rice.

This was my first game of the year at Metrodome that I wasn’t at, hence the blog actually RIGHT AFTER the game for once. Minnesota is 5-0 at home and 9-1 overall. The Saints won, so the Vikes remain the second seed in the NFC. I say this every week, but if Favre and the boys stay healthy, this really could be a magical year.

Chilly Gets an Extension

Who loves Brett Favre more, me or Brad Childress? The answer to that is now easy, Chilly does.

Favre is the key reason that currently the Minnesota Vikings are 8-1 and appear a lock for the playoffs and a realistic Super Bowl contender. Favre also plays a major role in the Minnesota Vikings announcing that Head Coach, Brad Childress has signed an extension with the Vikes through the 2013 season. The deal is reported to be worth 4-5 million per year.

WOW! What was Zygi thinking?!? Through a little over three and a half years, Chilly has a 32-25 regular season record and is 0-1 in the playoffs (last year loss to Eagles at Metrodome).

Now don’t get me wrong, assuming Chilly and the Vikes make a run in the playoffs then they have to keep him as the Head Coach, but why not make the Chiller win at least ONE playoff game? I just don’t get it.

Childress walked into a disaster in 2006. The Vikes were fresh off the Sex Cruise and the lingering effects of no Randy Moss were being felt in Minneapolis. It was Chilly’s first job as a Head Coach and he brought a no nonsense attitude, which I actually believe the Vikings needed.

Although I get sick of Childress and his ego sometimes, I will give him some credit. The Vikes have had some GREAT Drafts under him. Here is a list of the first rounders in Chilly’s four year reign:

2006: Chad Greenway, starting OLB and shows flashes of being a Pro Bowler
2007: Adrian Peterson, the best RB in the league and possibly the best player
2008: Jared Allen, DE acquired via trade for this pick, but Allen has been amazing
2009: Percy Harvin, WR on his to becoming the Rookie of the Year, a playmaker

I realize other people are involved in the NFL Draft, but that is a SOLID four years of picking/trading.

In Chilly’s four years as head coach here is his record:

2006: 6-10
2007: 8-8
2008: 10-6, Won NFC North
2009: 8-1 so far

So while I’m not totally shocked that Chilly got an extension, he really should be taking Favre and Peterson out for a damn nice steak dinner! Hopefully Chilly can prove Zygi right and lead the Vikes to the promised land… Super Bowl Champions!

As Expected, Vikes Beat Lions

Well after attending my fourth home game (of four so far) of the year, I once again am very tardy to blog. I think the reason being this time is really lack of excitement. I had great company, but the game was somewhat of a bore.

The Minnesota Vikings defeated the Detroit Lions 27-10 at Metrodome this past Sunday. Thanks to another monstrous day by receiver Sidney Rice (201 yards receiving), two rushing touchdowns by Adrian Peterson and a Vikes defense that simply shut down the Lions. Granted most teams do!

AD rushed for 133 yards along with his touchdowns of 22 yards and a 1 yard dive up the middle. In the first half Peterson and Harvin fumbled the exchange (pitch) on an end around. Detroit recovered. Also somehow Peterson was caught from behind and had the ball knocked out of his hands inside the Lions ten yard line too.

At half, Minnesota had DOMINATED the game, but was only up 10-0. The Lions started the second half fumbling the ball to the Vikes and that pretty much sealed the deal.

Brett Favre was 20 of 29 for 344 yards and one touchdown with ZERO picks. Favre continues to look amazing and clearly is the MVP of the NFL right now.

On defense, Ray Edwards was a MACHINE. He had two sacks and gave Matt Stafford hell all day long. Edwards made and amazing leap and drilled Stafford. It was ruled a penalty and it led to the Lions their lone touchdown of the game. After the game the NFL agreed the penalty should not have been called.

The only real concern in the game to me was how unnoticeable Jared Allen was. I understand you can’t dominate every game, but Allen was not a factor at all against Detroit. I’m assuming the blocking schemes of teams are gearing to stop him which plays a role in it.

Overall the Vikes are 8-1 with two winnable home games in the next two weeks (Seattle and Chicago). Assuming we win both of those the Vikes are 10-1 and clearly looking to half a first round bye in the playoffs.

I keep saying, if healthy this honestly could be the year. SUPER BOWL HOMEBOY!

Oh yeah on a total side note, once the NFL Playoffs start so does Newt’s playoff beard. Can’t wait! I encourage you to join in.

Favre Leads Vikes Over Pack, Again

Yeah, I know I’m about a week late on the review of the biggest game of the year so far. I blame a cousin’s wedding, Halloween in Deadwood, some car issues and the Timberwolves/Celtics Game. Sorry!

Anyways, Brett Favre returned to Lambeau Field and almost single handedly led the Minnesota Vikings over the Green Bay Packers, 38-26. This marked the SECOND time this year that Favre dominated his former team.

Favre was 17 of 28 for 244 yards and FOUR touchdowns. Brett Favre is a GAMER and he is a WINNER! If the Vikes stay healthy, WE ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!

The Packers scored first off a Viking turnover (shotgun snap to Favre when he wasn’t looking, likely John Sullivan’s fault). Vikes held Green Bay to a field goal.

Minnesota then had an amazing kick return to the 14 yard line by Percy Harvin. Thanks to an unsportsmanlike contact penalty, the Vikes scored on a one yard run from Adrian Peterson. 7-3, Vikes.

Visanthe Shiancoe caught a 12 yard touchdown pass and Ryan Longwell added a field goal to give the Vikes a 17-3 halftime lead.

Minnesota’s first drive in the second half resulted in a 51 yard Favre to Harvin touchdown where several Packers smashed in to each other and left Harvin free to run after the catch.

Then it got a little scary. Green Bay kicked a field goal and someone named Spencer Havner scored twice off Aaron Rodgers passes of 16 and 5 yards. 24-20, Minnesota.

Off another amazing Harvin return, Favre threw a two yard touchdown pass to Jeff Dugan to put the Vikes up 11.

The Pack answered with a Greg Jennings touchdown, but Favre sealed the deal with a 16 yard pass to Bernard Berrian.

Harvin ended the day with 5 catches for 84 yards including a touchdown and 175 yards on five kick returns. Can you say Rookie of the Year? What a GREAT pick he was!

Purple Jesus rushed for 97 yards on 25 carries including a touchdown.

The Vikes were again without cornerback Antoine Winfield. We need him back badly. His replacement is a hodgepodge of Benny Sapp, Karl Paymah and Asher Allen. Paymah should be cut, because he’s terrible, Allen is young and no good and Sapp is decent at best.

The Vikes defense was LIGHTS OUT in the first half, but made the game interesting in the second half. Not totally sure why.
One nice perk for the Packers is they apparently don’t call offensive holding on the home team in Green Bay. Minnesota had six sacks (Jared Allen – 3, Ray Edwards – 2 and Pat Williams – 1). Allen and Edwards were both monsters and beat up Rodgers.

Minnesota is 7-1 and atop the NFC North still. The Vikes appear on track to win the North and be a #1 or #2 seed in the playoffs. This year really could be magical. It’s amazing how good Favre, Peterson, Allen, Harvin and the Williams Wall is.

The Minnesota Vikings fell to 6-1 after losing 27-17 in Pittsburgh. The Vikes were jobbed big time by the refs on Sidney Rice’s touchdown catch in the fourth quarter to go ahead. The refs called a tripping penalty on tight end, Jeff Dugan. On the next play, Favre was sacked and fumbled the ball. Lamar Woodley of Pittsburgh took it 77 yards for a touchdown to put the Steelers up 20-10. It should have been Minnesota up 17-13.

On the ensuing kickoff, Percy Harvin ran the kick back 88 yards for a touchdown. Dugan NAILED a ref and knocked him out of the game. I’m not one to be overly violent to the refs, but they were horrible today. I hope Dugan broke the guys hip! After the Harvin touchdown it was 20-17 Pittsburgh.

Minnesota got the ball back with 3:21 and two timeouts. The Vikes drove from their own 26 yards line inside the Steeler’s 20, thanks to Adrian Peterson crushing a Steeler on a reception and running another 15-20 yards. Then the unthinkable happened, screen pass to Chester Taylor who let the ball fly off the top of his hands into the hands of Keyaron Fox of the Steelers. Fox ran 82 yards for a touchdown. Game over.

The game started out bad for Minnesota. About an hour before kickoff it was announced that Vikings Defensive MVP, Antoine Winfield is out 4-6 weeks with a broken foot.

Minnesota couldn’t do anything on their first four drives of the game, but on drive number five they went 76 yards, capped by a Peterson two yard touchdown run to go up 7-3. Pittsburgh kicked a field goal after a Chris Kluwe 19 yard punt. WOW!

The Minnesota defense played soft zone with no pass rush to end the half and they got burned. Ben Roethlisberger connected with some nobody receiver on a 40 yard touchdown with 24 seconds to go before half.

Minnesota proved they could go on the road and hang with a solid team. The Vikes honestly should have won the game. Penalties (some made up and some actual) killed the Vikes and obviously the two Favre turnovers were costly in the fourth quarter.

It was a bad day for Visanthe Shiancoe. He only had four grabs for 27 yards. He also had two false start penalties and a drop or two.

Although Harvin was stellar on Special Teams, he dropped at least two balls. Granted he got nailed on one of them.

Peterson ended the day with 69 yards on 18 carries and 60 yards on four receptions.

Favre continues to have good chemistry with Rice. Rice had 11 catches for 136 yards including an AMAZING catch on third down in the second half. He also had that touchdown that was called back on a phantom trip.

Tight end, Jim Kleinsasser continues to prove worthless. The Sauce dropped a touchdown pass and basically serves no purpose on the Vikings. What a bum!

The Vikes D held Big Ben to 14 of 26 for 174 yards, but the one touchdown really hurt them right before the end of the first half.

Favre was 34 of 51 for 334 yards. He threw a pick and fumbled, both for touchdowns. Granted the pick was Taylor’s fault. I’m sure glad we take out Adrian “All Day” Peterson during the fourth quarter on the last drive of the game, so smart. And talk is that Brad Childress may get a contract extension. Holy shit!

Minnesota faces another tough road game next week at Green Bay. The Vikes need to find a way to win at Lambeau. It will be Favre’s return, but it will also be Aaron Rogers throwing all over the Vikes defense, especially without Winfield.

It was a tough loss today, but more so because I lost a case of beer and money on the game. Minnesota proved they are an elite team.

Vikes Avoid Disaster

The Vikes beat the Baltimore Ravens thanks to a missed 44 yard field goal by Ravens kicker, Steve Hauschka. Minnesota won 33-31.

The game started great for the Vikes as they scored on their first two drives of the game. Brett Favre connected with Visanthe Shiancoe for a 19 yard touchdown to start the scoring and Bernard Berrian caught a four yard touchdown from Favre on the second drive.

At half Minnesota was up 14-3. Baltimore could barely get the ball across the 50 yard line. During the first half, Antoine Winfield went down with a foot injury. It was reveled today that Winfield has a sprained foot. His status for Sunday at Pittsburgh is unknown at this time.

In the third quarter Ravens running back, Ray Rice scored on a 22 yard run. Ryan Longwell nailed field goals of 40 and 22 in the third.

The fourth quarter is where DISASTER struck. Shiancoe caught a one yard touchdown to put Minnesota up 27-10, but then the Ravens went crazy or the Vikes defense fell apart. You pick. Baltimore scored THREE touchdowns in the fourth quarter and Ravens quarterback, Joe Flacco threw for 196 yards in the fourth quarter alone! Flacco ended up throwing for 385 yards. WOW!

Sidney Rice, who had the game of his life, caught a 58 yard BOMB from Favre to setup the Vikes game winning 29 yard field goal from Longwell. Rice ended the day with 176 yards on six catches. Favre was 21 of 29 for 278 yards including three touchdowns.

Adrian Peterson had two big runs and ended the day with 143 yards on 22 carries.

The Vikes are now 6-0 thanks to a little luck and a good game offensively by Favre, Rice and Shiancoe. However, the Viking defense appears VERY suspect. The front four struggled getting to Flacco and both Chad Greenway and Madieu Williams proved they can’t really tackle in the open field. Actually the WHOLE defense couldn’t tackle in the fourth.

The real story on defense was how BAD Winfield’s sub, Karl Paymah was. Paymah seriously is the WORST player in the NFL. He was absolutely clueless out there. Wow, is he bad!

Vikes play at Pittsburgh and at Green Bay in back to back weeks, winning one of those two would be great.

Vikes Improve to 5-0

In a game a little closer then the 38-10 score, the Minnesota Viking improved to 5-0 by beating the Rams in St. Louis.

The game couldn’t have started better for the Vikes. Minnesota took the opening drive 80 yards capped by a five yard Adrian Peterson touchdown run. On the Rams first possession, quarterback Kyle Boller fumbled the ball as Kevin Williams was running at him. Jared Allen scooped it and ran 52 yards for a touchdown, 14-0 Minnesota.

I think that heading in this had potential for a huge “letdown game” for Minnesota and I think after going up 14-0 early the boys somewhat lowered the intensity. St. Louis actually moved the ball nearly all day on the Vikes defense. Thanks to THREE red zone turnovers by the Rams, the Vikes dominated the day. Steven Jackson, who by the way said he was better then Peterson just not on as good of a team, fumbled on the Minnesota three yard line, Allen recovered. EJ Henderson had an interception on the Vikes ONE yard line and Tyrell Johnson had a pick in the end zone late in the game.

Brett Favre was 18 of 24 for 232 yards including a 13 yard touchdown to Visanthe Shiancoe. Favre also threw his ugliest pick as a Viking in the first half. By the way, Favre turned 40 yesterday. Percy Harvin had four catches for 66 yards, but he dropped a bomb that Favre placed perfectly in his hands.

Ryan Longwell nailed his only attempt, a 47 yarder in the first half to give the Vikes a 17-3 halftime lead.

By the end of the game, the Vikes had Tarvaris Jackson in at quarterback who led them on a touchdown drive capped by a Chester Taylor one yard run. Honestly though, how is T-Jack the backup quarterback over Sage Rosenfels?!? What if something ever did happen to Favre, we are gonna turn to T-Jack. God, I hope not!

Anyways, another win for the Minnesota Vikings. Although just looking at the score it looks like a TOTAL ass whippin’, it actually was a game for awhile. The Viking defense has some serious issues against the pass. The Viking linebackers struggle to cover tight ends and slants seem to be able to work on Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin. A guy who really played well today in the secondary was Benny Sapp. Sapp was all over the place making tackles.

At 5-0 the Vikes are atop the NFC North and host the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday. Guess what, I’m going to the game! After Baltimore the Vikes visit Pittsburgh and visiting Green Bay: three tough games that may really show everyone where the Vikes are actually at.

I’m a little behind thanks to Minnesota Twins playoff fever and having an actual fever. Being in person at the Vikings versus Packers Monday Night game was truly amazing. In Brett Favre “Revenge Game” against his former team, he played great. Favre was 24 of 31 for 271 yards including three touchdowns. Thanks mainly to Favre, the Vikes beat the Pack 30-23 at Metrodome.

The scoring started with a Favre to Visanthe Shiancoe one yard touchdown pass. Green Bay responded with a 62 yard pass by Aaron Rogers. In the second quarter, Favre threw a 14 yard strike to Sid the Kid Rice and Adrian Peterson ran in a touchdown from one yard out. AD’s score came after he earlier in the second quarter had the ball stripped for a touchdown. Peterson rushed for 55 yards on 25 carries.

In the third quarter Favre hooked up with Bernard Berrian on a 31 yard touchdown pass. Jared Allen, who had 4.5 sacks on the night, sacked Rogers in the end zone resulting in a safety. Green Bay scored 10 points late, but thanks to Rice recovering TWO Green Bay onside attempts, Minnesota sealed the deal.

The Vikes are now 4-0 and visit the horrible St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

Favre truly played amazing and he has been amazing as a Viking. With Sage Rosenfels or Tarvaris Jackson, I’m guessing the Vikes are 2-2 after four games. Favre wills the team to win and his veteran leadership is shown on the field.

This could be a magical year for the Vikes, but for it to be, Favre and Peterson need to remain healthy and the Viking defense needs to pull it together some. Rogers threw for 384 on the Vikes.

So obviously I'm a little late on the blog post. Sorry, I was at the game and stayed over in Minneapolis on Sunday. Monday consisted of driving home, napping and then winning VIKING/PACKERS TICKETS!!!

I’ve been a quite a few games at Metrodome, but I must say the Vikes 27-24 win over San Fran rates up with the best of them. The place went absolutely NUTS when Brett Favre hit wide receiver, Greg Lewis in the back of the end zone for a 32 yard touchdown with TWO SECONDS left!

The game started out looking like the Vikes might dominate the 49er’s. Frank Gore went out with a high ankle sprain and Favre hit Sidney Rice for a nice 30 yard touchdown to put Minnesota up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

Ryan Longwell kicked a 40 and 52 yard field goal in the first half, but it was the blocked one that ended the half that really took the air out of the stadium. Nate Clements returned in 59 yards to end the first half. San Fran was up 14-13 at the midway point.

In the third quarter Percy Harvin housed a kickoff 101 yards to put the Vikes up 20-17, but Vernon Davis scored his second touchdown of the day to put San Fran back in the lead.

I’m not gonna lie, I had little faith with under 1:30 and ZERO timeouts that the Vikes were going to drive down the field and score, but somehow Lewis went in for Harvin (who was gassed) and Favre stepped up and threw likely the most memorable pass EVER at Metrodome. Unbelievable!

Favre threw for 301 yards on 46 attempts. He completed 24 of them. Favre also had his first interception as a Viking.

Adrian Peterson rushed for 85 yards on 19 carries and really was a non-factor except for a 35 yard run he had. Somehow San Fran does a great job of limiting Purple Jesus.

All in all, an amazing win for the now 3-0 Minnesota Vikings. The Niners are much better then I thought they were, but still the Vikes HAVE TO win those games at home. Obviously the Monday Night game versus Green Bay is HUGE! I’m already pumped, but the Vikes have some issues still.

Bernard Berrian struggled to catch the ball. I swear he dropped three or four that hit him in the hands. The only reason I remember him from the game was that he dropped so many and on one of the four he caught, Favre ran down the field and laid out 49er linebacker, Patrick Willis. Favre shouldn’t be doing that due to his age, but it was great!

Clearly the Vikings Special Teams still has some issues and linebacker Ben Leber struggled covering Vernon Davis on pass plays.

I going with some of my best boys to the game on Monday and honestly can’t wait. If the Vikes are 4-0 a week from today, good things could be in store for the 2009 Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings are 2-0 after two road games. That is the good news. The bad news is that the Vikes have been really slow starters in both of their games against teams that frankly aren’t very good. Adrian Peterson still is proving that he is the most dynamic and explosive player in the NFL and the Brett Favre experiment seems to be paying off so far.

Favre has been very consistent, but he hasn’t thrown many long balls (or at least completed many) through two games. Favre seems to be developing some rhythm with Vikes rookie wide receiver, Percy Harvin. Harvin has caught a touchdown pass in both games this season.

Another concern for the Vikes is the offensive line. Once again they seem to be able to maul the defense on runs, but Favre is getting hit and sacked on passes. Favre has been good about taking sacks versus throwing the wild “gunslinger” passes that often end up as a turnover. The Minnesota front five has got to step it up and protect Favre. With a healthy Peterson and Favre, this team has some SERIOUS potential.

The Vikes have looked fairly decent on defense. Teams have had more luck running on Minnesota through two games then I expected. I’m not really sure why that is. Kevin & Pat Williams still seem dominant and middle linebacker, EJ Henderson is all over the place making plays. Although the secondary hasn’t been tested much, they are a little suspect I think.

Minnesota hosts San Francisco on Sunday. Both teams are 2-0 and both teams want to continue to show they are a contender in the NFC. Even after two slow starts for the Vikes, I fully expect the squad to play a dominant game on Sunday. Am I a homer? Of course I am, but the Vikes should be able to stop Frank Gore and force the 49er’s to pass the ball. I think the Vikes look totally legit and beat the Niners 27-10 at Metrodome on Sunday. Oh and by the way, I will be there!

And speaking of games, last night I won tickets to the Vikings vs Packers at Metrodome on Monday Night. I was rockin’ the Purple Jesus shirt by the way for luck. Besides the birth of my son, possibly the second best thing that has ever happened to me. The next two weeks should be fun for the Vikes and if they can win both games, like they should, things will be looking bright for the Super Bowl bound Minnesota Vikings!

Vikes Beat the Lions

Thanks to another big second half, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Lions 27-13 in Detroit. On the day that Vikings’ quarterback, Brett Favre started his record setting 271st straight game in the regular season, Minnesota struggled early. Adrian Peterson fumbled a Favre handoff on the first series that led to a Lion field goal. It was 10-0 Detroit before Favre hooked up with Visanthe Shiancoe on a onee yard touchdown to make it 10-7 shortly before the first half ended.

To start the second half Minnesota sacked rookie quarterback, Matt Stafford twice in the first three plays. Jared Allen forced a fumble/had a sack and Ray Edwards had one on third down. Minnesota got the ball back drove down and Ryan Longwell hit on a 26 yard field goal to make it 10-10.

After Chad Greenway forced a fumble, Peterson scored on a 27 yard run to put the Vikes up for good. After another Longwell field goal (46 yards) and a Favre to Percy Harvin three yard touchdown, Minnesota scored 27 unanswered on the Lions. Detroit kicked a junk field goal late, but Greenway recovered the onside kick and that was basically the ball game.

Favre was 23 of 27 for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Peterson had 92 yards on 15 carries including a touchdown. He also had 24 yards receiving.

Greenway had two interceptions, recovered a fumble and even caught the Lions onside as a member of the “hands team”.

All in all it turned out to be another good game for the Vikes thanks to a big second half for the second week in a row. I’m not sure why the Vikes are slow starters, but they need to start out looking good next week when they host the surprisingly also 2-0 San Francisco 49ers. By the way, I scored tickets to the game and I will be there!

Frank Gore will prove to be a test for the Vikes because for some reason so far this year that super stingy Vikes rush defense is looking a little shaky. Kevin Smith of the Lions ran for 83 yards on them today.

Thanks to the Cincinatti Bengals beating the Packers at Lambeau, Minnesota sits atop the NFC North solo in first place.

AD Leads the Purple to Victory

Not only is Adrian Peterson a man, he is THE MAN. Adrian “All Day” Peterson rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns including an amazing 64 yard burst in the second half. Peterson was dehydrated and had to have an IV put in his arm to get him better. He went on to score a one yard touchdown with blood gushing out of his arm. If Peterson remains healthy, he will go down as the GREATEST running back ever. No doubt. Kid is amazing!

Minnesota started the game off with a bad onside kick by Ryan Longwell. The Browns recovered and kicked a field goal to take the early lead. Thanks to a good Coaches Challenge by Brad Childress changed a Cleveland touchdown to a field goal. By the way, the only call should have been an Offensive interference. Anyways, the Vikes gave up a 67 yard punt return from Josh Cribbs shortly before the half and went into the locker room down 13-10.

In the second half Minnesota outscored Cleveland 24-7. The Browns touchdown was a late junk td. Brett Favre was 14 of 21 for 110 yards including a six yard touchdown pass to Percy Harvin. It was Favre’s first as a Vikes and Harvin’s first as a professional football player. How cool for Harvin? First touchdown caught was thrown by Brett Favre.

RANDOM NOTES
Kevin Williams recovered a fumble and Cedric Griffin had an interception.

Jared Allen was basically a no show today as Browns’ offensive tackle, Joe Thomas dominated him all day. The Browns selected Thomas over Peterson in the 2007 NFL Draft.

I hate Brian Billick as an announcer. Get a clue buddy! No idea on fumbles, challenges or basically anything!

The Vikes offensive line struggled against the blitz. Clearly Bryant McKinnie will NEVER become a pass blocker. He can maul on the run, but he is so slow out of his stance.

Feelin’ Kinda Sunday

The NFL Season for the Minnesota Vikings and their fans is only two days away. I can’t wait.

In the past couple days a few things have happened. Most notably, the Vikes cut wide receiver Bobby Wade and signed receiver Greg Lewis. You will be SHOCKED to know that Lewis is a former Eagle. Wade’s time seemed to be coming to an end since the Vikes drafted Percy Harvin. Harvin will be the Viking slot guy. Bernard Berrian, who is still nursing a hamstring, and Sidney Rice will be the Vikes starting receivers.

In the case hat never seems to die, Kevin and Pat Williams got another WIN as they both will likely be able to play the entire 2009 season without a suspension for their use of Starcaps, a weight reduction pill. Starcaps carried something banned by the NFL so the league continues to try and get them suspended for four games each. Let it go NFL!

Although Cleveland Head Coach won’t admit it, the Browns are going to start Brady Quinn at quarterback. I know it’s a road game and Favre is still very “new” to the Vikings, but I expect the Vikes to ROLL big in this game. I’m thinking Minnesota 31, Cleveland 10. Blowout city baby! If you want to make a few bucks, bet the Vikes big!

JDB Among Viking Cuts

After unsuccessfully trying to shop quarterback, Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota cut quarterback John David Booty. Booty was later added to the Vikes Practice Squad. Ian Johnson (RB), Garrett Mills (TE), Drew Radovich (OT), Colt Anderson (DB), Chris Clark (OT), Tremaine Johnson and Nick Moore (WR) round out the rest of the Practice Squad.

Other notables cut by Minnesota were: Marcus McCauley (CB), David Herron (LB) and Otis Grigsby (DE). McCauley was picked up by Detroit.

AD Steals the Show

On a night where Brett Favre was going to be the story, Adrian “Purple Jesus” Peterson stole the show. On the first play from scrimmage Peterson took a Favre handoff and went 75 yards for a touchdown. AD is the MAN! Peterson finished the game with 117 yards on 11 carries.

Minnesota beat the Houston Texans 17-10 to improve to 3-0 on the Preseason. Clearly a Preseason record doesn’t matter, but it’s good to win. The major plus was that Favre looked more in sync with his receivers and the Vikings suffered no major injuries.

Favre played into the third quarter and was 13 of 18 for 142 yards including a 28 yard touchdown pass to Chester Taylor (pictured). Favre also hit Percy Harvin in the HANDS in the end zone, but P-Harv dropped it. Overall Favre looked more comfortable at quarterback and even threw a block (granted a dirty one at a guy’s knees) on a Harvin run that was out of the Wildcat. Harvin was quarterback, Peterson was tailback and Favre was at receiver. What a fun formation!

The Vikes offensive line struggled a little bit against the pass as blitzes seem to confuse the team some.

The Vikes starting defense played solid again as Ray Edwards, Jared Allen and Antoine Winfield really stood out. Ben Leber and Madieu Williams both had interceptions.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m pumped for the regular season. If the Vikes stay healthy, they are a legit contender. The defense is solid and Peterson is clearly the best back in the NFL. With Favre’s leadership and the playmaking ability of Harvin, Sidney Rice and once dog, now stud, Vinsanthe Shiancoe, Minnesota will be in the playoffs and they will be dangerous.

The Vikes final Preseason game is this Friday against Dallas. Not many of the starters are expected to play.

Favre’s Viking Debut

Yeah so I know this is a little past due, but the Vikings beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Preseason game two by a score of 17-13 at Metrodome. It really doesn’t matter that they won, but it was the debut of Brett Favre as a Minnesota Viking.

Not gonna lie, it does look weird to see Favre in purple. Favre only played two series and went 1 of 4 for four yards. The Chiefs showed some blitzes and besides Favre looking a little rusty, the Vikes offensive line looked shaky at best.

Favre said after the game he was really nervous and was happy how things went. No major injuries to speak of for the Vikes and now with only two Preseason games left, Favre needs to get on the same page as the Minnesota receivers.

Now Vikes backup Sage Rosenfels didn’t play in the game due to an ankle injury. Tarvaris Jackson played rather well going 12 of 15 for 202 yards including two touchdowns. Visanthe Shiancoe caught a 13 yarder and Darius Reynaud scored on a 64 yard pass.

Adrian Peterson carried the ball ten times for 44 yards.

Vikes Top Colts in Preseason Opener

Thanks to a solid outing by Vikings starting quarterback (for the game) Sage Rosenfels, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Colts in Indianapolis 13-3 in the Preseason opener for both teams.

Rosenfels led the Vikes on a long first drive that included two fourth down conversions, to a touchdown. Chester Taylor had a great five yard sweep to the left side to put Minnesota up 7-0.

Rosenfels ended the day 10 of 13 for 91 yards. Most of the passes were quick hitters and play action passes. The once goat, Vinsanthe Shiancoe had a nice game (first quarter), that included four catches for 55 yards. Shiancoe really turned it on last year and GULP, may be a legit tight end in this league.

Adrian “All Day” Peterson only played the opening series and had four carries for 20 yards. AD showed his burst on his 13 yard carry. Can’t wait to watch Purple Jesus in the regular season!

The Vikes defense looked solid as the starters sacked Peyton Manning three times on the Colts opening series. Ray Edwards, Jared Allen and Fred Evans all got to Manning early. Granted the Colts O was without Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark, but the Vikes starting D looked good.

Unfortunately we didn’t get a look at Percy Harvin due to a minor shoulder injury. He was a game time decision and didn’t play. I was looking forward to watch P-Harv, but I guess something to look forward to next week.

The only real injury during the game was that Bernard Berrian appeared to have injured a hamstring. The result of the injury has not yet been disclosed. Hope it’s nothing major!

For as good as Rosenfels looked, Tarvaris Jackson was the opposite. T-Jack looked terrible going 7 of 15 for 39 yards. Granted he was with the second and third teamers, but T-Jack is a mess. Is he athletic? Yes. Can he read a defense/blitz or realize when pressure is on him? HELL NO! Jackson will get the start next week, but I’m guessing Rosenfels is the Vikes starter Week One.

Vikes kicker Ryan Longwell was two for two with field goals of 35 & 36 yards.

South Dakota native kicker Taylor Mehlhaff missed a 51 yarder. He made it at 46, but there was a penalty.

Another bright spot for the Vikes was running back, Albert Young. Young rushed for 58 yards on 14 carries and appeared to have a nice burst in him. Young appears to have a lock on the third running back spot for Minnesota.

All in all not an amazing game, but kinda what you expect in the Preseason. Rosenfels was solid. New center, John Sullivan played well, rookie Phil Loadholt was iffy starting at right tackle and the starting Vikes defense looked good.

Next game is next Friday, August 21 versus the Kansas City Chiefs at Metrodome.

Camp Update

ALLISON
In a somewhat surprising move, the Vikes cut wide receiver, Aundrae Allison. Allison was a 5th Round pick by the Vikes in 2007. Allison was mainly used as a kickoff/punt returner, including a 104 yard kick return against the Lions in 2007.

Allison was picked up by the Jets. I was surprised because earlier this off-season I read how Cris Carter was hyping Allison up and saying he thought he could really step it up this year.

Allison was behind Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin and Bobby Wade on the wide receiving depth chart.

T-JACK IS BACK
Tarvaris Jackson is back practicing and he says his knee feels good. T-Jack is back splitting reps with Sage Rosenfels and the first team offense.

HARVIN LOOKING GOOD
Percy Harvin caught some nice balls today from both Rosie and T-Jack. Harvin appears the “real deal”. Minnesota even worked on their version of the Wildcat today with both Harvin and Chester Taylor taking snaps at quarterback.

WILLIAMS WALL
Although legal proceeding are still ongoing, it appears both Kevin Williams and Pat Williams are going to beat the NFL in the Starcaps case. The NFL wants the Williams Wall suspended for four games, but the Williams’ keep winning legal battle after legal battle, to which the NFL always says they will appeal.

Vikes Sign Harvin

Percy Harvin, the Minnesota Vikings First Round pick signed a five year deal with the team today. Harvin will battle for a starting wide receiver spot and is a dynamic player that can be used out of the backfield and at quarterback ala “The Wildcat”.

This is GOOD news. Harvin is expected to be at practice yet this afternoon. Personally I can’t wait to watch Harvin play. I think he is the real deal and adds another huge playmaker to the Vikes Offense.

Who’s gonna get him the ball? Now that’s another story!

T-Jack Hurt

Not exactly the ideal start to Training Camp. On Day 2 of Camp, Vikings quarterback, Tarvaris Jackson was tripped/rolled into by defensive tackle Letroy Guion. T-Jack hobbled off the field and appears to have a sprained MCL.

If only a Grade I sprain as it appears, then Jackson will be day-to-day. If it proves to be more severe, Jackson couple be out multiple weeks.

I guess now it’s time for Sage Rosenfels to shine.

Vikes Open Camp

The Minnesota Vikings opened up Training Camp in Mankato, MN yesterday. They were without Brett Favre (yes, I’m done with that story. Favre is DEAD to me) and without First Round pick, Percy Harvin (remains unsigned).

Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels split reps with the first team as the quarterback battle will be the most interesting one going on at camp.

Second Round pick, Phil Loadholt (OT) is signed as likely will start at right offensive tackle. The o-line likely will be Bryant McKinnie, Steve Hutchinson, John Sullivan, Anthony Herrera and Loadholt.

Cornerback, Charles Gordon was waived. He just never could recover from his leg injury from last year. Too bad to year, Gordon showed signs of promise. It now appears his NFL career is over.

On a related sad note, Kenechi Udeze (DE) announced his retirement. Udeze’s cancer remains in remission but he has struggled with neuropathy in his feet. That has been one of the side effects of his chemotherapy treatments. Best wishes to Udeze outside of football.

No Favre, No Cry

So after a three month flirtation with the Minnesota Vikings, 39 year old quarterback, Brett Favre informed Viking’s Head Coach, Brad Childress he will remain retired.

To me this is unbelievable. He led the Vikes on like a “hot MILF (or maybe Cougar – take your pick)” who talks you into leaving your wife for her after a three month affair and then says “ah never mind.” What an asshole!!!

Favre played 18 years in the NFL, 17 of those with the hated Green Bay Packers. After the ugly split with the Pack and the weapons the Vikes offense has, I thought Favre was a LOCK for Minnesota.

As bad as I currently hate the NFL All-Time Interceptions Thrown leader, Mr. Favre, I will admit I had come to terms and was ready for him to be a Vike. At first I was like “hell no” I don’t want him, then I looked at what we had/have – Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels. I quickly changed my mind and was willing to take a chance with Favre.

I honestly do think he is a drama queen who needs attention, but it would have been fun for at least one year to see him as a Viking and to piss off those Packer fans!

Unfortunately time to move on, the Vikings starting quarterback in 2009 will be Jackson or Rosenfels. By the way, if you even suggest Michael Vick, you are a complete dumbass!

Jackson is a three year NFL veteran who proved in the Vikes playoff game against the Eagles that he has no clue how to read an NFL blitz yet. Jackson’s career numbers are 306 of 524 for 3,442 yards including 20 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Rosenfels is an eight year NFL veteran who has been a career backup. Rosenfels’ career numbers are 351 of 562 for 4,156 yards including 30 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.

On paper they are basically the same guy. I expect Rosenfels to win the quarterback battle and think that if he can cut down on turnovers and complete a third down occasionally the Vikes will be ok.

I mean even I could hand off to Adrian “All Day” Peterson! Percy Harvin joins Bernard Berrian, Bobby Wade and Sidney Rice as a decent receiving corp. So although it would have been fun with Favre, the Vikes will be okay without him. At least I hope so…

Winfield, Allen and the Favre Watch

WINFIELD
Great news, the Vikes agreed on a five year $36 million dollar extension for the 32 year old cornerback. In the contract are some interesting points that could add or subtract from the deal (like if Winfield isn’t a starter in 2011, his salary would be greatly reduced).

This is a win-win deal. Winfield is a solid cornerback. Excellent against the run and above average against the pass. He is thought of by many as the best tackling cornerback in the NFL. With the clauses included, the Vikes didn’t spend a ridiculous amount on him without covering their back.

This is nothing, but good news for the Vikings and their fans!

ALLEN
Also today, the Vikes signed third-round pick, Asher Allen. Allen is a cornerback that will battle for the nickel role with Charles Gordon and Marcus McCauley. Allen likely will also be used on Special Teams.

First-round pick, Percy Harvin and second-round pick, Phil Loadholt remain unsigned.

FAVRE WATCH
Still the Brett Favre watch continues to be a soap opera. Favre is supposed to announce his intensions by the end of July. It was once thought he was a lock to join the Vikes and now it sounds like he wasn’t going to come to Minnesota and remain retired, but several prominent current Vikings are telling him the want him on the team. It is hard to turn down Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen and Steve Hutchinson.

Who knows what Favre will do?!? I still think he is the Vikes starting quarterback in 2009 and now I can’t wait until it is official!

Brett Favre has said he will decide by July 30th if he will join the Vikings or remain retired. All signs point to him becoming a Viking. Once this actually does happen FOR SURE I will elaborate on my thoughts on Favre.

Catching Up on the Purple

Yeah I know I’ve been horrible about blogging lately, but June is a crazy month for work and to be honest, I haven’t really missed too much. Two major off-season stories remain, Brett Favre & Percy Harvin. Here’s a June recap basically.

VIKES SIGN DRAFT PICKS
Minnesota signed Fifth Round pick, Jasper Brinkley (linebacker) and Seventh Round pick, Jamarca Sanford (safety) to deals. Third Round pick, Asher Allen (cornerback), Second Round pick, Phil Loadholt (offensive tackle) and First Round pick, Percy Harvin (wide receiver) remain unsigned. No worries on this as it is still early. The remaining three should be singed and ready to go once Training Camp starts.

PERCY HARVIN
Speaking of Percy Harvin, it’s been an odd couple months with him so far. He fell to the Vikings in the NFL Draft because of character issues (smoking dope), but he has seemed electric during the OTA’s. However, Harvin has had a couple weird incidents. Not sure if this means something or just bad luck.

Harvin missed a Vikes Rookie Camp in May due to an illness. He was hospitalized for extreme dehydration. Harvin’s camp played this off as he had been training extremely hard and was not properly hydrated.

Last week Harvin left the mandatory NFL Rookie Symposium due to illness. It was not disclosed what was/is wrong with him.

Again, I don’t know what this means, but it sure is odd. I hope Harvin can stay out of trouble, because I think he will be a huge threat in the NFL and should help give the Vikes Offense even more of a explosive dynamic.

BRETT FAVRE
Really nothing has changed on the Favre deal. He and the Vikings have both been non-committal about him coming to play for Minnesota. Although I’m not 100% sure, I think Favre WILL be a Viking. I spoke with a current member of the Vikings and he told me both hammered and sober that Favre is going to be a Viking.

Assuming this does happen, the Vikes will be a legitimate contender for the Super Bowl. I realize Favre is old and past his prime, but he is better then T-Jack and Sage Rosenfels. Favre can read a blitz and he knows how to win. I’m also guessing he can hand the ball off pretty well to Adrian Peterson.

With a legitimate quarterback and some receiving weapons (Harvin, Sidney Rice, Bernard Berrian and dare I say Visanthe Shiancoe), teams won’t be able to load the box to try and stop AD. Or they can, but then the Vikes should have a fairly solid passing game too.

With a healthy Favre and Peterson, 2009 should be a GREAT year for the Minnesota Vikings and their fans. Now I guess we just wait until the Favre deal becomes official.

Vikes Minicamp

Yeah I know I’ve been a slacker lately, but it’s hard to get excited about too much during the summer. The Vikes concluded their first three-day mandatory minicamp and here is what we know:

*Still NO CLUE what the story with Brett Favre is. Seriously, I’m done with him. The Vikes will be fine without him. Yes, I just said that.

*Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson split reps with the first team and both had some good throws. It appears that Rosenfels is the likely starter for 2009, assuming Favre isn’t on the team.

*First Round pick, Percy Harvin is gaining some serious attention. Harvin looks amazing and not only can he catch, but the Vikes are working on packages to get him the ball. The Chiller is working on running the “Wildcat” with Harvin at quarterback. This really excites me! Harvin, Adrian Peterson, Chester Taylor, Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice, the Vikes may FINALLY have a legit offense again (besides just Purple Jesus).

*Cornerback, Antoine Winfield is still hoping the Vikes can work on an extension for him. Winfield was not at camp. It seems a no brainer to re-sign Winny and I think the Vikes will before the season starts.

*John Sullivan appears that he will in fact be the Vikes center in 2009. Sullivan has been taking some leadership and appears to be ready to fill Matt Birk’s shoes.

*Another new addition to the offensive line will likely be Second Round pick, Phil Loadholt. Loadholt appears to have the inside track on the right tackle job.

*Safety Tyrell Johnson looks good and teamed up well with fellow safety Madieu Williams.

*Undrafted rookie, Ian Johnson is battling Albert Young for the Vikes third running back spot.

*Viking Training Camp will begin on July 31 in Mankato. At least the first practice open to the public will be on the 31st.

Vikes Start OTAs

The Vikes concluded their first round of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) yesterday and here is what we know:

*59 players participated – many veterans did not. Not because they are unhappy, but to give them rest.

*Percy Harvin (WR) appears to be the real deal. He is super fast and has solid hands. Harvin also has been taking reps as a kickoff returner. I can’t wait to watch this kid play!

*Sidney Rice (WR) seems to be ready for a breakout type year. He had a great week that included several outstanding catches.

*Kenechi Udeze (DE) participated in the first round of OTAs. Great to hear!

*Undrafted rookie, Ian Johnson (RB) seems to have a great work ethic and determination to make the squad.

FAVRE
We still have no idea if Brett Favre is coming to Minnesota or not. What drama. Let’s figure it out and move on.

WILLIAMS WALL
It was a bad day yesterday for Kevin & Pat Williams and their Starcaps case. A federal judge has dismissed most of the claims by two Vikings stars facing suspension over their positive test for a banned diuretic. U.S. District Judge Paul A. Magnuson on Friday remanded two of the claims by Vikings defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams to state court.

Nothing is final yet, but this looks like the Williams Wall will be out the first four games of 2009.

The Vikes wrapped up their three-day rookie minicamp earlier today, with one rather high profile name missing. Percy Harvin, the Vikes first round selection was not in attendance. Not because he got high and forgot about it, but because he was in the hospital for dehydration.

Good news is that Harvin doesn’t have the Swine Flu and he was released from the hospital. It sounds like he just had been working out super hard and wasn’t properly hydrated. Weird, but ok. By the way, Harvin will wear #12.

FAVRE
Technically, Brett Favre could sign with the Minnesota Vikings and be our new quarterback, but I HIGHLY doubt that this is a serious consideration. I know the media LOVES this story, but I truly think Favre is done. Although, he is super pissed at Green Bay and the Vikes do have a lot of pieces that could lead to a good season, but still I think this is much to do about nothing.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d take him. Even though last year it appeared his arm strength has fallen off some, I’d still OBVIOUSLY start Favre over Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson.

Picture Favre, Adrian Peterson, Harvin, Chester Taylor, Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice all on the field at the same time. I’m thinking Super Bowl homeboy. Hopefully when you replace Favre with Rosenfels, that a Super Bowl run is still a possibility.

Round Seven: Jamarca Sanford, Safety

Similar to the Brinkley pick in Round Five, I don’t really know much about Sanford. Great last name obviously, but besides that. I know he has had some off-field issues including a disorderly conduct and theft of a car stereo, but he told the Chiller he has grown up.

Here is a scout’s breakdown on Sanford:

BIOGRAPHY: Four-year starter at strong safety who briefly spent time at outside linebacker as a sophomore. Senior totals included 82 tackles after 83 as a junior. Set a record for defensive backs at the combine when he completed 29 reps on the bench.

POSITIVES: Physical, run defending safety best playing downhill. Flies up the field, flashes on the scene and chases hard to get involved in the action. Displays a burst of closing speed, active in all aspects of the game and works hard to intimidate opponents. Effectively reads the action and displays solid speed to the sidelines.

NEGATIVES: Displays marginal ball skills and not active in coverage.

ANALYSIS: Sanford is a tough, hard-working safety best making plays up the field, between the numbers. He has limitations in coverage yet could fill the role as a traditional strong safety.

NEWT’S GRADE: C

Round Five: Jasper Brinkley, Linebacker

Well I can’t claim I know much about linebacker Jasper Brinkley from South Carolina. The Vikes moved up nine spot to #150 to grab him. Personally, I was hoping the Vikes would take Oklahoma guard, Duke Robinson and let Robinson and 2nd Round Pick, Phil Loadholt anchor the right side of the Vikes line for years to come.

It is not yet known what Minnesota gave up for this pick. More on that later.

Here is a scout’s breakdown on Brinkley:

BIOGRAPHY: Junior-college transfer who made an immediate impact upon arriving at South Carolina. All-Conference selection as a senior when he totaled 65/5/2.5. Broke into the starting lineup his first year with the Gamecocks in 2006 and posted 107/14.5/5 when he initially won all-Conference honors. Receive a medical redshirt in 2007 after playing four games then injuring his knee.

POSITIVES: Tough, run defending inside linebacker who projects as a two down defender. Plays disciplined football, stacks well against the run and wraps up tackling. Stout at the point, holds his ground against blocks and effectively uses his hands to protect himself. Forceful up the field and plays with authority.

NEGATIVES: Marginal skills in coverage and does more chasing opponents down the field rather than defending the pass. Lacks the quick change direction and plays with just average speed.

ANALYSIS: Brinkley looked like a star in the making after his junior season in 2006 but was set back by the knee injury the following season. He's best playing downhill and could effectively fill the inside linebacker position of a 3-4 alignment.

NEWT’S GRADE: C

Round Three: Asher Allen, Cornerback

Minnesota makes a third consecutive solid pick by drafting cornerback, Asher Allen from Georgia in Round Three. Allen is 5-9, 195 pounds. Although he is a bit undersized, he is a solid tackler and is somewhat in the mold on Antoine Winfield. Allen should battle Marcus McCauley and Benny Sapp for the nickel and dime role on the Vikes.

Here is a scout’s breakdown on Allen:

BIOGRAPHY: Two-year starter who totaled 44/0/7 as a junior after 64/3/4 during his sophomore campaign. Also returned kicks in 2007 and averaged 24.6 yards on 28 returns.

POSITIVES: Nice-sized cornerback who flashes ability. Quick flipping his hips off the line to run with opponents, has a nice move to the ball, and displays the terrific burst of closing speed. Shows a good head for the ball in run defense, and immediately comes up the field to make the tackle. Works hard to get off blocks. Plays with a good degree of suddenness.

NEGATIVES: Gives up a lot of underneath receptions and shows poor skill in zone coverage. Not a sure-handed tackler.

ANALYSIS: Allen possesses terrific size/speed numbers, yet he is very much a prospect who needs a lot of work on his overall game. He presently grades as a mid-round pick who could make it as a dime back at the next level. Had Allen returned for his senior season and performed up to expectations, he likely would have been a top-45 selection in 2010.

NEWT’S GRADE: B

Round Two: Phil Loadholt, Offensive Tackle

The Vikes made another great pick in Round Two. Minnesota selected offensive tackle, Phil Loadholt from Oklahoma. Loadholt is 6-7, 330 pounds. He is a BEAST! Loadholt will instantly be installed as the starting right tackle.

Minnesota needed to leave Day One of the NFL Draft with an offensive tackle and a receiver. Not only did the Vikes land a OT & WR, but they got great value and two possible solid NFL players.

Here is a scout’s breakdown on Loadholt:

BIOGRAPHY: Junior-college transfer who immediately broke into the starting lineup upon his arrival at Oklahoma. All-Conference selection the past two seasons, and named to several All-America teams.

POSITIVES: King-sized blocker who displays a lot of skill and potential in his game. Blocks with a wide base, keeps his feet moving, and stays square. Jolts defenders with terrific hand punch, and easily controls them once engaged at the point of attack. Gets movement run blocking, driving defenders off the ball, and finishes blocks. Patient in pass protection, easily anchors at the point, and effectively plays with leverage for a tall lineman. Pushes speedy edge rushers from their angle of attack. Keeps his head on a swivel, and works well with teammates.

NEGATIVES: Lacks top footwork sliding out to protect the edge, and struggles to adjust. Somewhat overweight and looks poorly conditioned. Does not play with good balance.

ANALYSIS: Loadholt showed terrific skill from the minute he stepped onto the field at Oklahoma, and he is a lineman with great upside potential. He played well at the Senior Bowl, and then he turned in a solid combine performance. If Loadholt properly conditions himself throughout the season, he offers starting ability on the right side.

NEWT’S GRADE: A

VIKES DAY ONE GRADE: A

Round One: Percy Harvin, Wide Receiver

I am SO JACKED with the Vikes Round One selection of wide receiver, Percy Harvin. Harvin is an explosive playmaker who has a nack for the end zone. The Vikes now have a burner receiver and return man!

Harvin has had some off-field issues including testing positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine, but this kid can play! A little shocking that Brad Childress took Harvin, but the Chiller must be feeling the heat! Chilly went down and met with Harvin a few days prior to today’s draft. He must have like him.

Here is a scout’s breakdown on Harvin:

BIOGRAPHY: Two-year starter who also saw extensive action with the first team as a true freshman. All-Conference selection the past two years and named as an All-American in 2008, when he led Florida in receiving posting 40/644/7 and finished second in rushing with 70/660/10. Sophomore receiving totals included 59/858/4, with 83/764/2 carrying the ball. Made an impact as a true freshman with receiving totals of 34/427/2.

POSITIVES: Explosive, big play ball-handler who impacts games in a variety of ways. Plays with tremendous quickness, balance, and body control. Easily adjusts to the errant throw, and effortlessly reaches back to make the reception at full speed without breaking stride. Possesses strong hands and displays the ability to pull the fastball from the air. Looks the pass in, makes the reception away from his frame, and effectively uses his body to shield away defenders or protect the pass. Runs low to the ground, beats defenders into the open field, and can run to daylight. Follows blocks handling the ball, eludes defenders, and possesses the ability to create his own yardage. Has a stout build and shows surprising power carrying the ball. Consistently keeps the play in bounds, and runs north-south to pick up yardage. Gives effort as a blocker. Does an outstanding job picking up yardage running after the reception.

NEGATIVES: Loses out battling large defensive backs. Is a talented receiver, yet he may not be a true #1 wideout in the NFL. Known to have an explosive personality, which has caused him problems in the past. Has had durability issues throughout college.

ANALYSIS: Harvin is a multi-purpose skill player who possesses great speed and the ability to score from any point on the field. He can be used in a variety of roles, and a creative offensive coordinator will find ways to get him the ball as a receiver or running reverses. Harvin also has potential as a return specialist, which only adds to his value. He has the ability to be a big-time player at the next level if he can stay healthy, focus on the team, and stay under control at all times.

Newt’s Vikes Mock Draft 2009

The NFL Draft is only eight days away. Minnesota has SIX picks (Rounds 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 & 7). Assuming they don’t trade for wide receiver, Anquan Boldin, below is my take on what they need to do.

The Vikes head into the NFL Draft with needs at offensive tackle, center, offensive guard, quarterback (although Childress doesn’t think so), cornerback and wide receiver.

If somehow the Vikes land Percy Harvin at # 22, the whole NFL Draft in 2009 is a success for Minnesota. Harvin is a STUD who can play the slot and be a return man. If Harvin is gone by # 22, The Vikes will look to help the offensive line. I think Minnesota needs to leave the first three rounds with a wide receiver, center and an offensive tackle.

I understand that Harvin failed a drug test at the Combine (marijuana), but still he is the guy the Vikes need! Yes, it is concerning one would be so dumb to be peeing dirty at the Combine where you KNOW you are going to get tested, but still I want Harvin. Randy Moss smoked a little dope in his day and he turned out alright! Granted Moss wasn’t dumb enough to smoke it before the Combine.

If the Vikes don’t land Harvin, I can live with Eben Britton, a offensive tackle in the first round. Minnesota will NOT be drafting a cornerback in Round One. These magazines and websites that think they will prove they don’t know ANYTHING about the Minnesota Vikings.

Another non-exciting Vikings off-season story, the Vikes matched the one year, $1.4 million offer made by the Bengals on fullback, Naufahu Tahi.

Really who cares? Tahi is decent at best. Adrian Peterson doesn’t like running with a fullback, but obviously the Vikes still need one. Tahi knows the plays and occasionally he shows up to play. I guess he is a Viking for another year.

Add this to the off-season of non-stories for the Vikes.

To date the Vikes have traded for Sage Rosenfels (QB), re-signed Tahi (FB), Benny Sapp (CB), Jimmy Kennedy (DT) and Heath Farwell (LB), signed Free Agents Karl Paymah (CB) and Glenn Holt (WR/KR). Minnesota lost Matt Birk (C), Darren Sharper (S) and Gus Frerotte (QB).

Chilly Passes on Cutler

Wow! Apparently awhile back Minnesota was working a three team deal that included disgruntled Broncos quarterback, Jay Cutler coming to Minnesota. Eventually Vikes Head Coach, Brad Childress changed his mind because he wasn’t completely “sold” on Cutler.

Now I’m not sure what the Vikes would have had to give up, obviously this year’s number one draft pick and more, but how do you NOT trade for Cutler?!? He clearly wants out of Denver. The Broncos have no real leverage and Cutler is WAY better then Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels.

Don’t get me wrong, Cutler seems a little on the “diva” side of things, but the kid can play. Plus he is super young. This whole deal is amazing to me. Chilly is FOR SURE heading into the 2009 season with either Jackson or Rosenfels as the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. What an idiot!

Here are the stats of the three quarterbacks:

Cutler - 3 year NFL vet, 762 of 1,220 for 9,062 yards including 54 touchdowns and 37 interceptions.

Rosenfels – 8 year NFL vet, 351 of 562 for 4,156 yards including 30 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.

Jackson – 3 year NFL vet, 306 of 524 for 3,442 yards including 20 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Who would you rather have?!? Again not knowing the asking price, but Chilly is terrible. He better hope his boy, T-Jack or his new boy, Rosenfels step it up or his days in Minnesota are for sure numbered.

Holt, Griffin and Sharper

I’ve been a little caught up in March Madness, so this isn’t exactly breaking news. No the Vikings didn’t sign wide receiver, Torry Holt because that would make too much sense. However, they did finally land a Bengal’s receiver. Who wants Housh when you can have Glenn Holt?!?

Holt is receiver, but he was signed more because of his kick return ability. Last year in Cincy, Holt averaged 24.1 yards per kickoff return. It is expected that Holt will battle Darius Reynaud for the Vikes kick return job.

GRIFFIN
In addition to signing Holt, the Vikes also gave an extension to Cedric “Showtime” Griffin. Griffin was set to be a Free Agent after the upcoming season. Griffin was drafted in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Vikes and he has started 38 of 46 games. He has 223 tackles, three picks and seven forced fumbles as a pro.

Griffin is kindda odd because some games he looks like a pretty solid cornerback and then others he is a disaster. All in all this is fine for the Vikes. I’m guessing they didn’t exactly “break the bank” to give the contract extension.

SHARPER
Oh yeah and Darren Sharper signed with the Saints. Good riddance!

Vikes Sign Paymah

The Vikes finally signed a Free Agent. Too bad you have never heard of him.

Minnesota signed cornerback, Karl Paymah to a one year deal worth a little over $1.5 million. Paymah is a four year NFL veteran from the Broncos. It is expected that he will battle Benny Sapp for the nickel position.

Paymah is 26 and was drafted in the third-round by Denver in the 2005 NFL Draft. He has started five games in his NFL career and has three interceptions.

The Paymah deal isn’t bad news, it’s just hard to get too excited about our lone Free Agent signee who is either a nickel or dime back.

Vikes Re-Sign Sapp & Kennedy

Not exactly earth shattering news, but the Minnesota Vikings re-signed Benny Sapp (CB) and Jimmy Kennedy (DT) to one year deals. Sapp will battle to be the dime back and Kennedy is a possible backup for either members of the Williams Wall.

McKinnie
Other interesting news, Bryant McKinnie (OT) appears to have lucked out again. He was set to go to trial for a brawl outside a Miami nightclub, but he entered a diversion program. Some community service and no more arrests and no jail for the slowest, most overpaid offensive tackle in the NFL. I guess this is a good thing.

Not a Fan of T-Jack
Rumors are rampant that Brad Childress sent Tarvaris Jackson to be the “closer” on the TJ Houshmandzadeh deal. Apparently Housh wasn’t too impressed with T-Jack and that helped him make his decision to choose Seattle. Personally I think this is just a good story. Housh took the money.

Possibilities?
I don’t really count Karl Paymah (CB) or Leonard Weaver (FB) as interesting possibilities. Both are scheduled to visit Winter Park.

However, I do like the thought of trading for Anquan Boldin (WR). It is very unclear what his status is with the Cardinals. He’d definitely be worth a First Round pick.

Trading for Jay Cutler (QB) of Denver would be awesome too. Although I highly doubt this is even a remote possibility.

Also, the Rams cut Orlando Pace (OT). I understand his is getting old and is a little injury riddled, but would you rather start and old Pace or a terrible Ryan Cook at right tackle. Something HAS to be done here and I don’t think starting a rookie is the best idea.

Vikes Re-sign Farwell

As the Minnesota Vikings remain very quiet during Free Agency, one move they made over the weekend was a very good decision. The Vikes re-signed linebacker/special teams standout, Heath Farwell.

Farwell will be the number one backup to EJ Henderson, Chad Greenway and Ben Leber. In addition to developing into a rather solid backer, Farwell is a STUD on special teams.

Farwell missed all of last season with a torn ACL. Minnesota clearly missed him as the Vikes special teams was pathetic.

The re-signing of Farwell is fairly under the radar nationally, but this was a wise move for the Vikes. Now let’s go find a right tackle!

Birk Sign with Ravens

Longtime Minnesota Vikings center, Matt Birk signed a three-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. The deal is worth $12 mil with half guaranteed.

Birk is a six-time Pro Bowler and a St. Paul native. It was thought that Birk, 32, would go on the circuit but end up back with the Vikes. I guess not.

I’m not as crushed as some people are. Birk’s game has slipped some and seems a little arrogant. Maybe I didn't liked him since he never had the back of Randy Moss.

The real question is who will be the center for the Vikes in 2009. John Sullivan is now looking like the guy. That is a little scary.

So apparently Minnesota is planning on doing nothing in Free Agency. We better have a SOLID 2009 Draft because we are headlining into next year with Sage Rosenfels instead of Gus Frerotte, minus Birk and soon to be minus Darren Sharper with ZERO additions to the team.

I sure hope Chilly has something sneaky up his sleeve, but I doubt it.

I Want My $6 Back

So after flirting heavily with the Minnesota Vikings, wide receiver, TJ Houshmandzadeh apparently chose money over winning. Housh was in Minneapolis on Saturday and much of Sunday talking with the Vikes. It was thought that Minnesota would likely lock him up. In the end he signed a five year deal with the Seahawks for over $40 million with $15 being guaranteed. A little pricy for the Housh.

Don’t get me wrong I wanted him. I’m not sure if partially it was that $6 water I bought him at the Vegas club or if I just think he’s good. I think Housh wanted out from under Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson’s shadow and he wants to prove that he is a legit number one wide receiver in the NFL. Housh is no Randy Moss (but who is) or Reggie Wayne, but he would have been a nice addition to Bernard Berrian.

Picture Berrian, Houshmandzadeh, Sidney Rice and Bobby Wade being four wide with Adrian Peterson in the backfield, now that actually sounds like an offense. Oh yeah, unfortunately the quarterback is Sage Rosenfels.

So the Housh chose Seattle over Minnesota and Cincy. Dammit!

The new hot rumor is that Minnesota is interested in trading for Broncos quarterback, Jay Cutler. Cutler is mad at the Broncos because they were supposedly interested in trading him in a three team deal to acquire quarterback, Matt Cassel. Cassel ended up with the Kansas City Chiefs.

This would be AWESOME if the Vikes landed Cutler, but this will never happen.

No Housh, no Cutler, now as a Viking fan the highlight of Free Agency will be us re-signing Matt Birk. What a thrilling off-season so far!

Oh by the way, it sounds like Darren Sharper will either be a Saint or a Bear. He’s old so who cares?

Hello Sage, Goodbye Gus

Well not exactly breaking news, but the Vikes traded a fourth round pick to the Texans for quarterback, Sage Rosenfels. This means Rosenfels will likely be the Vikes starter in 2009.

After completing the trade, the Vikes cut quarterback, Gus Frerotte. The Gus Bus has once again left Minnesota.

Minnesota also re-signed defensive end, Jayme Mitchell and tight end, Jim Kleinsasser. Both are good backup signings.

It appears that safety, Darren Sharper’s days are done as a Viking. Thank God!

Matt Birk however may be back as the Vikes center. The Vikes were said to have interest in center/guard, Jason Brown, but he appears likely to sign with the Rams.

Several fun names being thrown around but won’t happen are wide receiver, TJ Houshmandzadeh (did I mention I once bought him a $6 water at a club in Vegas?) and safety, Brian Dawkins. I’d love both, but neither will be Vikes.

However realistic names the Vikes may be interested in are wide receiver, Nate Washington and cornerback/return man Chris Carr. Washington interests me none and Carr, sure if he’s cheap. We could use a nickel back and definitely a return man.

Vikes Close to Trade for Rosenfels

The Minnesota Vikings are close to having a new quarterback. Minnesota is negotiating with the Houston Texans on a trade for quarterback, Sage Rosenfels. Houston wants a third rounder and Minnesota is offering a fifth. It likely will be Rosenfels for a fourth round pick in the upcoming draft.

Here is the Sage Rosenfels bio:

He was drafted in fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft out of Iowa State.

In 2001 he was the third stringer in Washington.

In 2002 – 2005 he was in Miami as a backup.

In 2006 – 2008 he was in Houston. Rosenfels spent most of the time backing up Matt Schaub. He did start in ten games with the Texans going 6-4.

Rosenfels has 30 career touchdowns with 29 interceptions. He has thrown for 4,156 yards in the NFL.

Last year, the Vikings offered Houston a third-round pick but the talks ended when the Texans asked for a second-rounder.

The trade can’t become official until this Thursday at 11 pm, the start of Free Agency.

Rosenfels will compete (and win) with Tarvaris Jackson for the Vikes starting quarterback job. Gus Frerotte, who is under contract, will likely be released. Frerotte said he didn’t want to play for the Vikes unless he was the starter.

I don’t really know what to think of this. Rosenfels doesn’t blow me away, but I guess I’m not ready to say it is a disaster…yet. Giving up a fourth rounder isn’t too high of a price and he does have some experience.

The Free Agent quarterback field was weak. Basically Minnesota’s options were trade two first rounders for Matt Cassel, sign Jeff Garcia or trade for Derek Anderson.

I’m not sold on Cassel or Anderson, but I think I would rather have had Garcia, who I thought we’d end up with.

Although this is not official yet, it sounds like it will happen. The Vikes new quarterback depth chart is: Sage Rosenfels, Tarvaris Jackson, John David Booty. Wow, thank God for Adrian Peterson!

Vikes Cut Mo Hicks

The Minnesota Vikings cut running back/return man, Maurice Hicks on Wednesday. Hicks was signed as a Free Agent last off-season and was penciled in as the Vikes kickoff return man.

Hicks had injury and fumblitis issues throughout the season, so his role became very limited. Minnesota still is in need of a genuine return man. Wide receiver, Aundrae Allison is currently number one on the kickoff return man depth chart for the Vikes.

With Free Agency set to begin next Friday (Feb 27), the Vikes also are in need of help on the offensive line (particularly right tackle), quarterback and in the secondary.

NFC Tops AFC in Pro Bowl

Six Minnesota Vikings players helped the NFC defeat the AFC 30-21 in the Pro Bowl. Even the die hard football fan I am, the Pro Bowl is tough to watch.

Adrian Peterson had eight carries for 48 yards including a 10 yard touchdown.

Jared Allen had three tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery.

Kevin Williams had four tackles, while Pat Williams had three.

Antoine Winfield had four tackles and an interception.

Steve Hutchinson played a majority of the game at Guard.

Now it is officially the off-season! Bring on Free Agency and the NFL Draft!

CC Snubbed Again

I’ve been too depressed with football to blog lately. Some notables since the last update:

*New Head Coach of the St. Louis Rams, Steve Spagnuolo hired Vikes Special Teams Coach, Ray Ferraro as a Linebackers Coach. This is great news, the Vikes special teams was a complete joke last year. It was the worst in the NFL. Of course, Chilly didn’t have the gall to fire his buddy, by Spagnuolo helped us out!

*Darren Sharper appears to be done as a Viking. This also is great news. Sharper was great in his prime, but his prime ended two years ago.

*Vikes Defensive Coordinator, Les Frazier interviewed for a number of Head Coaching positions, but was not hired. Frazier will once again be running the defense in Minnesota next year. This is also good news.

*Adrian Peterson was named the FedEx Ground Player of the Year. He led the NFL in rushing with 1,760 yards. Purple Jesus ran for over 100 yards in 10 games in 2008.

HALL OF FAME
Good news first, longtime Vikings guard Randall McDaniel was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame today. McDaniel is very deserving of this honor as he was a Pro Bowler for 12 of his 14 years in the NFL. Congrats to him!

The bad news is that somehow for the second year in a row, Cris Carter was snubbed. Carter is an eight time Pro Bowler with 1,101 career receptions for 13,899 yards and 130 career touchdowns. It is CRAZY that he was not elected.

CC is third All-Time in receptions and he is the only wide receiver ever to have over 120 receptions twice. Carter helped lead the Minnesota Vikings to two NFC Championship games and he mentored Randy Moss. Carter and Moss are arguably the best duo EVER to play receiver together in the NFL.

All Cris Carter does is get first downs and score touchdowns. CC is very deserving of the Hall of Fame and he has to get in next year.

Oh yeah, the Super Bowl is tomorrow. Who cares?!?

A Quarterback

I honestly can’t believe that the Arizona Cardinals are in the Super Bowl. How depressing as a Vikings fan. I know this will sound very homerish, but if the Vikes had a quarterback, they could have easily made it to the Super Bowl this year.

Arizona is no good. Their defense is average at best and to stop their offense all you have to do is blitz them and double Larry Fitzgerald, who by the way is a total stud.

I fully expect Pittsburgh to hammer the Cards in the Super Bowl. Steelers 34 - Cardinals 20. It will be a blowout. Maybe I’m like this every year, but I really don’t care about this year’s Super Bowl and have no real desire to watch it. Don’t get me wrong, I will, but it is just depressing!

The biggest question facing the Vikes this off-season will be quarterback. I really have no idea what they will do. In less then two weeks it is time to start looking forward to the 2009 season.

I think I’ve finally recovered. It’s amazingly how fast it went from we won the NFC North and are in the Playoffs (hosting a game even) to season over. Thanks for playing!

As we look to 2009, one thing is obvious; the Minnesota Vikings need a starting quarterback.

Tarvaris Jackson just isn’t going to cut it as a starter in this league. He seems like a great kid and he has talent, but he is a backup, not a starter. T-Jack will NEVER win a NFL Playoff game.

Bad news is that options are VERY limited for the Vikes. Gus Frerotte ripped Childress for not playing him in the Playoff game and he says he wants out unless he is the starter in 2009. See ya Gus!

The Vikes need a veteran, but not Gus. Jeff Garcia and Brett Favre are options. Matt Cassel was Franchise Tagged by the Patriots so he is only available via a trade. Personally I hope that the Vikings can make a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals for Carson Palmer. He seems to have worn out his welcome there and they need to make changes in Cincy.

I really don’t know what the Vikes will do at the quarterback position. One thing is for sure, they have to do something!

Season Over

Everyone loved Philadelphia and apparently for good reason. Minnesota ended up being without Pat Williams (defensive tackle), Ray Edwards (defensive end) and Artis Hicks (right tackle).

Basically the game came down to two plays, a terrible interception for a touchdown by Tarvaris Jackson in the second quarter and a 71 yard Brian Westbrook screen pass for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings defense was solid all night except for the one huge play to Westbrook. Cedric Griffin had an interception near the end of the first half and Jared Allen had two sacks including a forced fumble which Fred Evans recovered.

Once again the Vikings special teams were a disaster and several Philly punt returns put the Eagles in great field position.

Jackson was 15 of 35 and as expected he looked HORRIBLE against the constant Philly blitz.

Adrian Peterson scored both of Minnesota’s touchdowns. AD gained 83 yards on 20 carries. His touchdowns were 40 and 3 yards. Both occurred in the first half.

The Vikes trailed 16-14 at half and were shutout in the second half.

It was a close game and the Vikes were in it until the Westbrook touchdown. I can’t say I’m shocked although I did expect the Vikes to win. It will be interesting to see what happens this offseason because one thing is clear, Tarvaris Jackson is NOT an NFL quarterback. He can be a backup, but he is NOT a starter on a playoff team.

Obviously Brad Childress will remain head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, but something HAS to be done at quarterback.

Not much more to say, the season is over. All in all it was a good year. The Vikes won the NFC North, Peterson led the NFL in rushing, both Allen and Bernard Berrian appear to be solid signings, but the season is over.

Once again life is depressing. Just think only like three months until the NFL Draft. I’m sure next year will be the year the Minnesota Vikings turn it around.

Vikes vs Eagles

Happy 2009! The Minnesota Vikings host the Philadelphia Eagles in three days and I can’t wait. It sounds like Pat Williams is a game time decision, but likely will play. This is great news for the Vikes. The Giants really made it seem like Fat Pat is the reason that Minnesota is so hard to rush the ball against.

Defensive end, Ray Edwards tweaked his knee and will not play Sunday. Brian Robison will start in his place. Robison is solid and not much, if any of a drop off from Edwards.

Adrian “Purple Jesus” Peterson revealed he has had a bum ankle for the last three weeks, but that if feels “pretty good” currently. For the Vikes to win Sunday, AD needs to have a solid 100+ yard game. I think he will.

Philly is going to blitz Tarvaris Jackson and try to force turnovers. I think T-Jack and the offense rises to the occasion and beats the Eagles 24-13 at Metrodome.

Purple Jesus Wins Rushing Title

AD WINS RUSHING TITLE
Adrian “Purple Jesus” Peterson won the NFL rushing title for 2008. Peterson rushed for 1,760 yards. AD also became the fifth running back in NFL history to rush for 3,000 yards in his first two seasons.

The Vikes will host the Eagles next Sunday at 3:30 pm. The Minnesota/Philadelphia matchup will be the last of the First Round games.

Vikes Host Eagles in First Round

Wow, what a game for the Vikes. It ended up not mattering since Chicago lost to Houston, but Minnesota barely beat New York earlier today.

The Vikes came out very flat, but were up 10-0 after a 67 yard touchdown run by Adrian Peterson. All Day rushed for 103 yards on 21 carries including one fumble that Jimmy Kleinsasser recovered.

The rest of the second quarter and the third belonged to the Giants. Eli Manning only played a half, but David Carr came in and threw a touchdown pass to put New York up 16-10.

Tarvaris Jackson was 16 of 26 for 239 with one touchdown and an interception (in the end zone). T-Jack hooked up with Bernard Berrian on a 54 yard touchdown to bring the Vikes within two.

Ryan Longwell nailed a 50 yarder with time running out to give the Vikes a 20-19 victory. With the win the Vikes clinched the NFC North and are the three seed in the NFC. Minnesota will host Philadelphia either next Saturday or Sunday.

I must say it was a little disturbing to see how flat the Vikes looked. T-Jack looked bad, but rallied late and AD had a tough day besides the big run.

All in all I guess all that matters is that the Vikes are 1 of 12 teams that have a shot at winning the Super Bowl.

Thanks to a Ryan Longwell 50 yard field goal with time running out the Vikes won 20-19 over the NY Giants and clinched the NFC North title and are in the playoffs as the #3 seed. Minnesota will host either Dallas or Philly pending who wins the late game.

Big Day

If Minnesota beats the New York Giants today, the Vikes clinch the NFC North and make the playoffs. If they lose and Chicago beats Houston, Minnesota will not make the playoffs and I assume Brad Childress will be fired.

Most Vikings fans know that a big game equals trouble for the Vikes, but today the trend changes.

I think the Vikes will beat the Giants today. It helps that Brandon Jacobs is out for the G-Men and that New York has no reason to play their starters or at least for the starters to play with much passion.

Childress and the boys will come out fired up and Adrian Peterson will have a big game to redeem his three fumbles from last week. AD scores twice as the Vikes beat the Giants 24-10.

Let’s hope I’m right. It’s less then three hours until kickoff and I’m feeling kinda Sunday!

Destiny

Destiny - A predetermined course of events considered as something beyond human power or control.

The Chicago Bears blocked a Green Bay Packers field goal with less then 30 seconds to go last night which sent the game the into overtime. Chicago won the toss and kicked a field goal to win. Thanks to the Packers inability to close, the Vikings and the Bears are tied for the NFC North lead.

All Minnesota still needs to do is beat the NY Giants at Metrodome on Sunday and we win the division, thus clinching a playoff spot. If Minnesota losses and Chicago beats Houston, the Bears win the NFC North and the Vikes season is over.

Good news is that New York has clinched the #1 seed in the NFC so hopefully they rest Eli Manning and Brandon Jacobs at least in the second half.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty nervous about this upcoming game with the season on the line. Brad Childress declared that Tarvaris Jackson will be his starter versus the Giants, as he should be. I’m not nervous because of T-Jack, but more because of Viking history. Big games plus Minnesota Vikings usually equals disaster.

Hopefully destiny is on our side this year. All I want for Christmas is a Viking playoff berth!

Xmas Comes Early for Atlanta

The Minnesota Vikings decided to give the Atlanta Falcons an early Christmas present, a playoff berth. Thanks to four turnovers, the Vikes outplayed the Falcons yet lost 24-17.

Matt Ryan led the Falcons down the field with a dink and dunk no huddle offense ending in a touchdown on Atlanta’s first drive. Minnesota answered with a 90 yard drive capped by a Tarvaris Jackson to Visanthe Shiancoe 21 yard touchdown pass. It went downhill from there.

After the Viking defense forced a three and out on the ensuring possession, Bernard Berrian fumbled the ball, Atlanta recovered. That led to a Falcons touchdown.

Disclaimer: You are about to read the FIRST EVER rip of Adrian Peterson.

Peterson was HORRIBLE today. He fumbled THREE times and Atlanta recovered two of them. The TV donkeys kept saying “oh he’s trying to do too much,” no actually he just played BAD. This fumblitis honestly needs to be a little bit of a concern. AD is still the best back in the NFL, but HOLD ON TO THE DAMN BALL! Sorry I yelled at you Purple Jesus, I still love you.

While AD played terrible, tight end, Visanthe Shiancoe played the game of his life. Shanks caught seven balls for 136 yards and had two touchdowns.

Vikes quarterback, Tarvaris Jackson played well, but couldn’t hold the ball either. Jackson was 22 of 36 for 233 with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. T-Jack rushed for 76 yards on eight carries, but he had two fumbles (one a snap over his head).

Late in the third quarter Ryan fumbled in the end zone and somehow both Darren Sharper and Cedric Griffin both MISSED it! Atlanta recovered and it proved to be the game winning score.

Minnesota got the ball down seven points with 2:44 to go. Peterson and Jackson both fumbled before the Vikes couldn’t convert on fourth down. Typical Vikings, can’t go out and win a game late.

Random Game Notes:
Artis Hicks was inactive with an injury so Ryan Cook started in his place. Cook still blows!

TJack needs to learn how to slide. He thinks he’s Peterson out there.

Bennie Sapp is a disaster. All he does is get burned and commit penalties.

Speaking of burned, Napoleon Harris couldn’t cover me in the flat. I’m pretty sure I could outrun Sharper nowadays too. At least Harris can tackle. Time for Sharper to mail it in for a career.

Now at 9-6, the Vikes either need to beat the Giants next Sunday or need the Bears to lose one of their remaining two games (vs Green Bay and at Houston) to win the NFC North and make the playoffs.

Quarterback Dilemma?

Although Gus Frerotte is healthy enough to play Sunday as the Vikes host the Falcons, Vikes Head Coach Brad Childress has declared Tarvaris Jackson as Sunday’s starting quarterback. T-Jack threw four touchdown passes last week and led Minnesota to a huge win at Arizona. Jackson looked much better last week then he did in the Vikes first two games of the year, both losses.

Frerotte is recovering from a broken bone in his lower back and he was not too excited to hear that Jackson was going to start over him. "Obviously, I'm not happy about it," Frerotte said.

Jackson is 1-2 this year as a starter while Frerotte is 8-3 so far.

I think this is the right decision, but I’m not ready to crown T-Jack as the guy for the rest of the season and neither is Chilly. Minnesota should beat the Atlanta Falcons Sunday even without defensive tackle, Pat Williams. If the Vikes beat the Falcons, they clinch the NFC North thus making the PLAYOFFS!

Although mother nature really doesn’t want me to go, I think I’m going to head up Sunday for the game so I can pop some bubbly with Chilly, Purple Jesus and the boys when we are 2008 NFC NORTH DIVISION CHAMPS!

Six Vikings Make Pro Bowl

Antoine Winfield, Adrian Peterson, Kevin Williams and Steve Hutchinson were all named starters for the Pro Bowl.

Jared Allen and Pat Williams were named reserves.

In Winfield’s 10th year in the league he finally was selected to his first Pro Bowl, a huge honor for him. “This is one of the best days of my life,” said Winny.

One noticeable snub from the Vikes was linebacker, Chad Greenway who has had an outstanding year, but lacks the national name recognition.
